As a digital piano specialist, I recently embarked on an exciting journey… to play every model in the Yamaha CLP-700 Series.
This range consists of five remarkable digital pianos: the CLP-725, CLP-735, CLP-745, CLP-775, and the flagship, top-of-the-range CLP-785.
Each model promises an incredible piano-playing experience, but my mission was to uncover what really sets them apart and what truly surprised me during this musical exploration.
I’ve had worse jobs!

The journey began with the entry-level Yamaha CLP-725, and it left me pleasantly surprised.
This model offers a lovely, authentic playing experience with its synthetic ivory and ebony keys, mimicking the texture of a real grand piano.
The sound quality, considering its size, exceeded my expectations.
You certainly won’t need to turn up the volume to full to enjoy it fully in a living room or bedroom.
The CLP-725 bridges the gap between Yamaha’s budget digital piano series, the YDP Arius range, and the CLP-700 series.
While it has a smaller selection of voices and lacks a screen for navigation, it’s a compelling option for beginners and those seeking an affordable yet substantial digital piano.

Moving on to the CLP-735, I instantly felt a distinct upgrade.
Its upright piano cabinet design is not just visually appealing but invites you as the player to notice some welcome additions in the ‘function’ department.
The synthetic ivory and ebony keys make it suitable for both beginners and more advanced pianists but what surprised me most was the ease of navigation, thanks to the handy screen on the left-hand side.
The CLP-735 provides a more extensive range of voices compared to the 725, including a 16-track recorder, a valuable tool for pianists at all levels.
This model definitely offers more in both elegance and functionality.

The CLP745 & above takes the series to the next level, and it’s all about the keys.
In addition to synthetic ivory and ebony keys, this model introduces “wooden keys,” replicating the touch and experience of a traditional acoustic grand piano.
While beginners may not immediately notice the difference, as an experienced player, you understand the significance of not just what the instrument sounds like, but how it feels and responds to your playing too.
The keys feel superb and really allowed me to have precision in the control of my playing, of course enhancing the overall playing experience but also the performance too.
When an instrument feels this good, you do play better!

The penultimate model in the CLP range, the CLP-775, was an absolute joy to play.
Its keyboard feels incredibly close to a real grand piano, and you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference if you closed your eyes.
The secret lies in the keyboard weighting.
Unlike most digital pianos with gradual key weighting, the 775 takes it one step further; each note is graded (weighted) differently, just like a real piano.
So as I moved up the keyboard, playing higher and lighter in the piece, the key mechanism of the CLP-775 allowed me to explore so much more dynamically because of the way the keys respond to you.
It’s at this point in my exploration that I really noticed the difference between just playing & really feeling the music.

The CLP-785 is the pinnacle of the CLP-700 series.
When I first sat at the piano in all its glory, you’re first taken aback by its super classy, polished ebony & slightly taller cabinet design.
It looks fantastic but does it sound as good as it looks?
The short answer is yes. Yes, it does!
The CLP-785 features Yamaha’s flagship ‘Spruce Cone’ speakers, which surprisingly make a huge difference to the depth & power of the sound, especially in the low frequencies.
I have to admit, I played this one the longest & found myself closing my eyes & getting lost in the playing.

Before I decided to play every model in the Yamaha CLP-700 range, I already knew that it would deliver.
The CLP range is renowned for its quality & Yamaha have a long-standing reputation for delivering exceptional digital pianos, and it’s clear the CLP-700 series lives up to that legacy.
The great thing I’ve learned having explored the whole range is how each model, in its unique way, closely replicates the experience of a real piano, in varying degrees.
Yamaha have carefully designed this series to cater to everyone, from beginners to experienced pianists.
Regardless of your budget, there will be a CLP-700 model that will suit your musical journey.
