In Part 4 of our deep dive into Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app, we’re taking a good look at one of the most inspiring areas: the Song Section.
This part of the app is all about helping you learn to play, enjoy performing, and interact with the music in a really clever way. And depending on which Yamaha model you have — like the CSP, CLP, or CVP — you might be surprised just how many built-in songs you have access to.
At first glance, it’s a library of music, divided into categories like Pop, Standards, Folk, Classical and more. But it’s so much more than just a playlist.
When you load up a song — like The Final Countdown or Hallelujah — you’re not just listening, you’re seeing full musical arrangements, complete with drums, bass, and more. And for the CSP models like the CSP-275, it sounds fantastic.
But this isn’t just about passive listening — it’s about active learning.
Once you double-tap a song, you’re into interactive notation mode. This is where things get clever:
Whether you’re a beginner or teaching a child, these tools are incredibly motivating. I’ve seen people go from never having touched a piano to playing along with full band arrangements, just by using these features.
You can tweak the settings to match your learning style:
And for those accompanying rather than playing melody? Just press the Chord view button at the bottom — you’ll see chord symbols to follow and can play along as the full arrangement plays the melody. There’s even a Lyrics view for proper karaoke sessions. Plug in a mic and you’re ready to sing your heart out.
You can even transpose songs to match your vocal range, or slow down the tempo for practice.
The app also makes it really easy to record yourself playing along. Just choose a track (I recommend track 2 or 16 for your own piano part), hit record, and start playing. Once you’re done, name your song, save it in the app, and share it via email or social media — ideal if you want to show your progress to friends and family.
Perhaps my favourite feature — and one I’ve covered in detail in a separate video — is the Music Library. This lets you load your own songs from your phone’s music library, and the app will analyse them to show chords and even simplified notation. Pair that with the LED stream lights and you’ve got an incredibly fun, personalised way to learn your favourite tracks.
If you missed the earlier parts of the series, you can catch up here:
Got something to trade in? Use our Part Exchange Form to tell us what you’ve got — you can even upload photos so we can give you a fair and speedy quote.
In Part 5, we’ll be diving into the Recording Section — including how to use the built-in 16-track recorder. You’ll learn how to layer your own compositions, mix tracks, and bring your creative ideas to life using the same piano you play on every day.
Thanks so much for watching and reading along. If this video has helped you, please give it a thumbs-up on YouTube — it really helps us as an independent store.
