5 Things We’d Love to See in the New Yamaha DGX-680

Sep 09, 2025
5 min read

The Yamaha DGX-670 has been one of the most popular “portable grand” digital pianos in recent years. For good reason too – it’s that rare breed of instrument that straddles two worlds beautifully: it looks and feels like a piano, but it behaves like a mini orchestra in a box. You can sit down and play Chopin one minute, then flip into a jazz trio, full rock band, or even an EDM setup the next.
But here’s the thing – Yamaha never leaves the DGX series sitting still for too long. Each new release builds on what came before, and those upgrades usually make a massive difference to players. Which has got us wondering: surely, a DGX-680 is on the horizon?
Until Yamaha finally spills the beans, I thought I’d put together my own wishlist of features we’d love to see in the new model. Some of these are practical, some are a bit dreamy, and one is a proper curveball. But hey, it’s fun to imagine.

1. A Bigger, Touch-Screen Display
The DGX-670’s screen is decent, but let’s be honest: once you’ve used a touchscreen on your phone or tablet, fiddling with little arrow keys and buttons feels clunky. A proper touch display on the DGX-680 would be a game-changer. Imagine being able to swipe through voices, tap on styles, and even pinch-zoom into score view when you’re using the notation function. It would make the whole experience far more modern and intuitive – less “menu-diving” and more “let’s get straight to the fun.”

2. Improved Speakers with More Punch
One of the DGX’s strongest selling points is that it’s a self-contained instrument – piano, styles, speakers, all in one. But if there’s one area Yamaha could seriously raise the game, it’s in the built-in speakers. The DGX-670 sounds fantastic through headphones or external monitors, but the onboard system could use a bit more weight. A DGX-680 with beefier speakers, richer bass, and sparkling highs would bring it closer to the experience of Yamaha’s Clavinova series. For players who don’t want to faff about with extra gear, that could be the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade.

3. Seamless Bluetooth Audio & MIDI
This one feels almost inevitable. We live in a wireless world now – phones, headphones, even fridges. The DGX-670 already has some Bluetooth functionality, but having to mess around with dongles or adaptors kills the flow. The DGX-680 should be able to connect to your phone, tablet, or laptop instantly. Imagine streaming backing tracks straight through its speakers or firing up Flowkey, Smart Pianist, or GarageBand and having it all sync wirelessly. That kind of integration makes the piano feel less like a box in the corner of your room and more like the beating heart of your digital setup.

4. More Styles & Voices (Including Modern Pop Sounds)
The DGX series has always had a ton of voices and styles, but the next big leap could be adding sounds that reflect the way modern music is actually being made. Yes, we all love a lush string pad and a Latin combo style, but how about some lo-fi beats for chill-out practice, or proper synth layers that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Billie Eilish track? The DGX-680 could really open itself up to younger, creative players by giving them the tools to play not just “piano music,” but the soundtrack of today.

5. Lighter & Easier to Gig With
Let’s be real: moving a DGX-670 is about as fun as dragging your nan’s oak sideboard down the stairs. They’re heavy, awkward beasts. If Yamaha can trim some weight off the DGX-680 without compromising on build quality, it could become a far more appealing option for gigging musicians. Imagine being able to rock up to a wedding gig with a DGX in the boot, set it up in minutes, and have a piano that not only looks classy but also handles everything from solo ballads to full backing band arrangements. That kind of versatility is priceless – but only if your back survives getting it there.

6. Curveball: An AI Song Assistant
Now for the wild card. We’re in 2025, and AI is sneaking into almost everything – so why not digital pianos? Picture this: you sit down, play a few chords, and the DGX-680 says, “Got it – here’s a progression you might like.” Suddenly, you’ve got drums, bass, and guitar parts layered underneath your noodling. Play a little melody, and it harmonises it for you. You could effectively co-write songs with your piano. It’s not about replacing creativity – it’s about sparking it. A DGX that can act like a never-tired bandmate or songwriting partner? That’s the sort of feature that could blow people’s minds and drag the humble “portable grand” into a whole new era.

Final Thoughts
Of course, all of this is speculation. Yamaha is famously tight-lipped about upcoming models, and for now, the DGX-680 exists only in our collective imagination. But one thing’s certain: when it does arrive, it’ll build on everything we already love about the 670 and push the series forward again.
The big question is: should you wait for the DGX-680 or just buy a DGX-670 now? Honestly, it depends. If you need a great digital piano today, the 670 is already an outstanding option. But if you’re happy to sit tight, keep your eyes on our site – we’ll be among the first to cover the 680 the moment Yamaha pulls the curtain back.

In the meantime, you can explore our current DGX-670 stock here. It might not have an AI co-writer built in (yet), but it’s still one of the most versatile, inspiring instruments you can buy right now.

  • Good day,
I truly enjoy your YouTube video demonstrations of the Yamaha DGX-670 capabilities. As you no doubt know, the Yamaha manual could be Smith better/ helpful, but it’s not.
My question is whether your experts have put together a more helpful reference or manual, and if so, where can I purchase it, please?
    Many thanks!

    1. Thank you for your kind words! We don’t currently have a dedicated guide or manual for the DGX-670, but we do have lots more demonstrations and helpful videos covering the DGX-670 over on our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@ePianoscouk/search?query=dgx%20670

That way you can pause, replay, and really get the most out of your instrument.

  • Hi Isaac, great article. Cool wishlist. I have the 670 which I purchased from yourselves) and I felt the onboard speakers let it down a little, and agree they could raise the bar and add more punch. Yes we can only wait in anticipation for a 680.

    Cheers

    1. Hi there, thanks for your kind words – really glad you enjoyed Isaac’s article! You make a great point about the DGX-670 speakers; they’re good, but an upgrade with a bit more punch would certainly be welcome. Fingers crossed the DGX-680 delivers on that when it eventually arrives.

  • Here are some limitations in the DGX-670 and complaints I have heard users have mentioned:

    – Weak speaker power and loss of clarity at higher volumes
    – GHS key action feeling too light and less realistic compared to competitors
    – No dedicated line outputs for connecting to amplifiers or mixers
    – No support for the Smart Pianist app
    – Some tuning instability or “out of tune” sound on startup
    – Heavy weight making portability difficult
    – Limited recording and arranger track flexibility
    – Some keybed noise or mechanical thuds during play
    – No option to load custom samples/voices

We hope the next DGX model will include:

    – Stronger speakers with cleaner sound
    – Improved key action (with escapement or wood/hybrid feel)
    – Stereo line outputs and expanded connectivity
    – Smart Pianist app integration
    – More reliable pitch stability
    – Lighter and quieter construction
    – Option to load custom samples/voices
