There’s a funny myth among songwriters that inspiration only strikes when you’re sitting at a real grand piano, in some candlelit studio, surrounded by old sheet music and crushed dreams. Truth is, some of the best songs I’ve ever written have started on a digital piano.
The beauty of a digital piano is choice. You can decide what kind of inspiration you want. Some days I’m in the mood for the rich, concert-hall presence of Yamaha’s CFX grand voice – perfect for ballads that need a bit of drama. Other days, I’ll switch to the Bösendorfer for something gentler and more cinematic. And sometimes, the moment calls for something completely different – maybe a 1970s-style electric piano straight off a Bill Withers record.
That’s the magic: every sound changes how you play. It’s like having a dozen different instruments , and personalities , sitting under your fingertips.

I still remember my first real experience of that feeling. I was a teenager with a white Yamaha CLP-535, and the Bösendorfer voice absolutely captivated me. It made me play differently – softer, more deliberate. Every note felt like it mattered. That was the first time I realised how the sound itself could shape the song. I ended up writing my first proper piece on that piano, and – thanks to the wonders of digital tech – I recorded it right there on the instrument and saved it to a USB stick. Magic in three clicks.
When I think back to that moment now, I feel proud. I’m a better player these days, sure, but the excitement of those early discoveries is still the same. Especially when I sit at one of today’s models – like the Yamaha CLP-800 series – and hear how incredibly lifelike they’ve become. The realism, the responsiveness, even the way the keys feel under your hands… it’s inspiring in its own right.
Writing on a digital piano gives you everything you need tocatch the wave when creativity hits. Timing, skill, and a bit of luck, but when those stars align, you can absolutely soar.
So, to any songwriter who thinks they need a grand piano to write something great – take it from me: you don’t. You just need the right sound, the right moment, and maybe a little button that says “Bösendorfer.”
To put that realism to the test, Chris recently sat down with every model in the new Yamaha CLP-800 series, comparing their sounds side by side. It’s a fascinating watch – you can really hear the progression through the range, from the beautifully balanced tone of the entry models to the breathtaking richness at the top.
🎹 Thinking of upgrading?
We offer part-exchange on most digital pianos and keyboards – making it easy to trade in your old instrument for something new.
