I’ve been asked to chat about the differences between the Yamaha Avant Grand N1X and NU1X today. If like me, you are getting confused with all the numbers associated with Yamaha, these two are the easiest to distinguish.

Basically, the N1X is the grand piano action hybrid and looks more like a grand albeit slightly somewhat shorter in body, whereas the NU1X is the upright action (U for upright!).
Apart from the obvious differences, that the N1X has a horizontal hammer action as per a grand piano and the NU1X has a vertical hammer action, the main differences are in the speakers and sound.

Bearing in mind that both of these instruments are excellent in themselves, the N1X has the addition of Spatial Acoustic Sampling. What this is, is acoustic samples taken not just in stereo, but also from four other areas, creating a hemisphere of sound. The best analogy is ‘surround sound’.
Why or how this makes is difference, in my thoughts, is because the instruments emulate different types of piano. They are not trying to be better models of the same instrument.
The N1X also has 6 x 30W speakers over the NU1X that has two 45W. In my opinion, this is quite an obvious alteration considering that the sound of an upright comes from the back of the body, thus doesn’t need distribution over more of the instrument, whereas a grand would have sound resonating from within the horizontal body, so 6 x 30w speakers are placed appropriately to replicate this.
A three-way system featuring woofer, mid-range and tweeter speakers precisely reproduce the rich natural resonance of the soundboard.
Size and weight don’t differ greatly.
The NU1X weighs in at around 240lbs with it standing around 150cm wide, 102cm high and 46 deep.
The N1X (in the red corner) is a mildly heftier 258lbs and 147cm wide, 100cm high and 62 cm deep.
Of course, there will be more depth to the N1X being a horizontal instrument, but you will get this into your front room if you’re struggling to house a 9ft acoustic grand piano!
