Why You Need a Beginner Piano That Keeps You Motivated

Jul 08, 2026
10 min read

I work in a piano shop, but I’m still learning piano myself.

That probably gives me a slightly strange perspective, because I spend my days around some truly lovely digital pianos, but I also know what it feels like to sit down as a learner and think, “Right… I should probably practise.”

And there’s the word that can kill it a bit: should.

I know practice matters. Of course it does. But I don’t want piano to always feel like a chore. Sometimes I want it to feel fun. I want that little dopamine hit when I play something and think, “Ooh, that’s starting to sound like music.” I want small milestones to feel rewarding. I want to feel challenged enough that I get a sense of accomplishment, but not so much that I feel defeated every time I sit down.

That’s why I think choosing a beginner piano is about more than just finding the cheapest 88 keys you can get away with.

The piano has to make you want to come back to it.

A beginner piano should give you something back

When you are learning, you are already asking quite a lot of yourself.

You are trying to get your fingers to behave. You are trying to read music, or follow chords, or remember which hand is doing what. You might be trying to count, use the pedal, play evenly, keep your left hand from wandering off into another postcode – all at the same time.

So the last thing you need is an instrument that makes the whole thing feel more lifeless than it needs to.

A good beginner piano should reward you a little. Not by doing the work for you, but by making the work feel worthwhile.

When the keys feel decent, the sound is enjoyable, and the piano feels like a proper instrument, it changes your relationship with practice. You are not just ticking off a task. You are sitting down to something that gives you a bit of pleasure back.

That really matters.

Yamaha CLP-825

The affordable proper starting point: Yamaha P-145BT

For a lot of beginners, the Yamaha P-145BT is a really sensible place to start.

It gives you 88 weighted keys, which is important because you are learning on something that behaves more like a piano rather than a lightweight keyboard. That does not mean it is intimidating. In fact, I think one of the strengths of the P-145BT is that it feels simple and approachable.

You are not faced with hundreds of buttons and features you may never use. You can switch it on and play.

The Bluetooth audio is a really nice bonus too. You can stream music through the piano’s speakers, which is great for playing along with songs, lessons, videos, or anything else that keeps practice feeling a bit more enjoyable. It also works with Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app, which makes it easier to access and control features from your smart device.

For me, the P-145BT is the affordable proper starting point. It is compact, simple, weighted, and beginner-friendly, but it still feels like you are starting on a real instrument.

That is the balance I like.

The portable step-up: Yamaha P-225

The Yamaha P-225 is where I would look if you want something still compact, but a bit more satisfying to play.

It keeps the portable idea, so it is still easy to live with, but it gives you more of that “proper piano” experience. You get Yamaha’s CFX concert grand piano sound, more voices, higher polyphony than the P-145BT, and extra features that help the sound feel fuller and more expressive.

Now, as a beginner, do you technically need all of that on day one?

No, probably not.

But this is where I come back to motivation.

If the piano sounds richer, feels more rewarding, and gives you a bit more back when you play, you may simply enjoy it more. And if you enjoy it more, you are more likely to keep going.

That is why I think the P-225 is a lovely option for someone who wants a beginner piano, but does not want to feel like they have bought the absolute bare minimum. It is still practical, but it feels that bit more grown-up.

The piano you can see every day: Yamaha YDP-165

Then you have something like the Yamaha YDP-165.

This is a different type of choice because it is not really about portability. It is about having a piano that becomes part of the home.

And honestly, I think that can be very motivating.

A portable piano is brilliant when you need flexibility, but because it can be tucked away, it sometimes does get tucked away. The YDP-165 is more like a proper piece of furniture. It has a cabinet design, a key cover, three pedals, and a more permanent presence in the room.

You see it every day.

That sounds simple, but it matters. Sometimes the biggest hurdle with practice is just starting. If the piano is already there, looking inviting, you are far more likely to sit down for five minutes. And quite often, five minutes becomes ten.

The YDP-165 also feels more premium than a basic starter piano. It has Yamaha’s CFX piano sound and a GH3 keyboard action with synthetic ebony and ivory keytops, so there is a more serious feel under your fingers.

I think this could suit both adult beginners and families. For a child, it gives them a proper home piano to grow up with. For an adult, it feels like you have made a lovely space for music in the house.

It is not something you are hiding away. It is part of the room, and that alone can keep you connected to it.

The one that feels special: Yamaha CLP-825

The Yamaha CLP-825 is one of my absolute favourites.

There is just something about stepping into Clavinova territory that feels special. The cabinet is beautiful, the whole thing feels more classical and premium, and it has that sense of being a proper piano in the home.

For a beginner, some people might say, “Isn’t that too good for someone just starting?”

I don’t really see it like that.

Of course, you do not need a Clavinova to learn your first notes. But if the instrument makes you feel inspired, that has real value. The CLP-825 gives you Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial piano voices, along with expressive features that help it feel more rewarding to play.

And this is where the emotional side comes in for me.

Even when you are playing something simple, a better piano can make it easier to pour a bit of feeling into it. It gives you more back. The sound has more beauty to it. The experience feels more premium. You feel like you are sitting at something worthwhile.

That can be hugely motivating.

If you have always wanted to learn piano, or you are coming back to it after years away, there is nothing wrong with choosing something that feels special from the beginning.

Sometimes that is exactly what keeps you playing.

The learning-help route: Yamaha P-S500 and CSP models

There is another route worth mentioning too, especially for families or beginners who like the idea of a piano helping them along the way.

The Yamaha P-S500 and the Yamaha CSP Clavinova models have Stream Lights, which guide you to the keys to play. It is almost like having a more interactive learning system built around the piano.

I do not want to overstate it and pretend it replaces learning properly, because you still have to put the time in. But for motivation, it can be a game changer.

For some people, reading music is the part that puts them off. For others, they want something more visual and immediate. Stream Lights can make that first stage feel more fun and less intimidating, because you are not just staring at a page wondering where to begin.

The P-S500 is more expensive than a standard beginner portable piano, but it gives you that “mini CSP” learning angle in a more compact format. The CSP range takes the idea further, with the full Clavinova feel and the Stream Lights learning system working alongside Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app.

For a whole family, I think that can make a lot of sense.

It is a higher investment, yes. But if you want something that actively helps with learning, keeps people engaged, and gives you a piano you can grow into rather than quickly upgrade from, it is well worth thinking about.

Used digital pianos can be a very smart beginner option

Brand new is not the only route either.

Used digital pianos can be a really smart choice for beginners, especially if your budget might stretch further into a better model than you could afford brand new.

Instead of buying a brand-new entry-level piano, you might be able to get into a used Yamaha Arius, Clavinova, CSP or CVP for similar money. That could mean a nicer cabinet, better speakers, a more expressive feel, or extra learning features.

And again, it comes back to motivation.

A better-feeling piano can make you want to play more. So if a used digital piano gets you into something more premium from day one, that can be a very sensible way to start.

The key thing is buying used from somewhere you trust, where the piano has been checked, prepared properly, and comes with support.

My honest advice

My honest advice as a beginner who works in a piano shop is this:

Do not just buy the cheapest thing that technically counts as a beginner piano.

Buy the piano that gives you the best chance of still playing in six months.

For some people, that will be the Yamaha P-145BT because it is affordable, weighted, simple, and compact.

For others, it will be the Yamaha P-225 because it gives you a more satisfying portable piano experience.

For a home or family setting, the Yamaha YDP-165 might be the one that makes piano feel like part of everyday life.

If you want something that feels genuinely special, the Yamaha CLP-825 is a beautiful place to start.

And if learning support and fun are high on your list, the Yamaha P-S500 or CSP models with Stream Lights are absolutely worth a look.

There is not one perfect beginner piano for everyone.

But I do think there is a perfect question to ask:

“Will this piano make me want to sit down and play?”

Because if the answer is yes, you are already giving yourself a much better chance of sticking with it.
