I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this happen.
Someone sits down at a Yamaha CVP Clavinova, has a quick play, hears a nice piano sound… all good. Then I say, “Go on, press one of the styles.”
They hit a chord, and suddenly they’re not on their own anymore. There’s a drummer, a bassist, a full band locking in behind them. The look on their face is always the same. A mix of confusion, excitement, and “what just happened?” That’s the moment the CVP stops being just a piano and becomes something else entirely.
A lot of digital pianos focus on recreating the feel of an acoustic, and the CVP does that brilliantly, especially on the higher models. But the real magic is in the arranger engine.
Play a simple chord with your left hand and the CVP builds a full backing around you. Drums, bass, guitars and strings all follow what you do in real time. Speed up, they follow. Slow down, they breathe with you. Change chord, the whole band moves instantly. It doesn’t feel like a backing track. It feels like you’re leading a band from the piano.

This is one of the best parts to watch. Someone sits down a bit cautiously, maybe they haven’t played in years or they’re lacking confidence. They trigger a style and within about 30 seconds everything changes.
They loosen up, their timing improves, and they start smiling. Even a simple chord progression suddenly sounds full and musical. It’s like the CVP quietly says, “You’re alright, keep going,” and that shift makes a huge difference.
Practising on your own can feel a bit repetitive. The CVP flips that completely.
Take a simple progression and turn it into a jazz trio, a pop ballad, a funk groove or even a full big band arrangement. Because it responds to how you play, it never feels exactly the same twice. That keeps things interesting, and when it’s interesting, you naturally play more.

This is the part people often underestimate. Fun matters, not in a gimmicky way, but in a way that makes you actually want to sit down and play.
You can sing along using the mic input and vocal harmony, play along with full styles, record your performances and explore far more than just piano sounds. Before long, you’re not just practising. You’re experimenting, playing and creating, and that’s usually when people fall back in love with music.
If you want to see what all of this actually looks like, this is well worth a watch.
