What’s the best app for learning piano? Read on to find out…
Technology has advanced so much in the last 10 years and subsequently the ways in which we learn to play the piano – and the tools which we use to do this – have also developed into incredible opportunities for anyone to learn.

There are hundreds of apps to choose from when learning to play the piano, but the one I want to focus on (and for good reason) is Yamaha’s own ‘Smart Pianist’ app.
It’s my go-to app when people ask me ‘What’s the best app for learning piano?’
First off, it’s TOTALLY FREE which is already a big tick in my books… but it’s what the app can do which makes it even more impressive.
Before I reveal all, it is worth mentioning that the ‘Smart Pianist’ app does not work on every digital piano or keyboard, so you will need one of the following Yamaha pianos in order to use it:
The ‘Smart Pianist’ app really comes into its own when used alongside Yamaha’s wonderful CSP range of Pianos.
The ’S’ in CSP stands for ‘Smart’ and that’s all down to utilising the functions of the app alongside the piano.
Not only does the app work as a controller, allowing you to browse and navigate through the voices and styles built into the CSP, but it opens up a world of possibilities, allowing you to access functions you otherwise couldn’t without the app.

The beauty of an app on your tablet/smartphone is its visual display… it allows you to clearly see exactly what you’re doing, without having to worry about fiddly buttons.
With the CSP range, the app is most exciting when using one of the built-in songs, of which there are 400 in total.
Imagine you’re at your piano teacher’s house and in the stool lies a plethora of sheet music & books, ranging in difficulty & genre to cater to all players.
Now, imagine this but digitally… at the touch of a finger you have access to hundreds of pieces of music.

Not only the sheet music, which you can follow along with, but it will also give you the chords (and lyrics where applicable).
Guess what? It takes it even further. The ‘Smart Pianist’ app also allows you to learn these songs using the piano’s built-in ’stream lights’ which trickle down like a waterfall on a panel just above the keys.
It will wait for you, in case you’re struggling, and won’t proceed with the song until you’ve pressed the right note(s).
You can decide whether you wish to play/learn the left or right hand, and this matched with the sheet music in front of you makes for a really effective and exciting learning opportunity.

Ultimately, the CSP range offers the most versatile playing and learning experience I’ve ever come across in the digital piano space.
Its functions are unmatched and the proof is in the pudding — if you spend just 5 minutes playing and utilising the stream lights, you’ll no doubt be playing a tune even if you’ve never played before!
