When you sit down at your keyboard, the way it looks and responds directly affects how you play. That’s why Yamaha has packed the PSR-SX series with a surprising number of customisable display and touchscreen settings—many of which most players probably never even realise exist.
I stumbled across some of these settings while experimenting on my Yamaha PSR-SX920, and I was genuinely surprised by how much control you have over the screen, button brightness, and overall workflow. If you’ve never explored these settings, you might be missing out on some simple but game-changing tweaks that make playing easier—whether at home or on stage.
Watch the video below to see these settings in action:
At first glance, the default display settings on the PSR-SX series do the job just fine. Yamaha has designed them to be clear, functional, and easy to navigate. But if you take a moment to dig into the menus, you’ll find that you can tweak things to suit your specific playing environment.
For example, did you know you can adjust the brightness of the buttons? It’s one of the most dramatic changes you can make—it turns your keyboard into something that looks like the cockpit of a spaceship. It’s fun, but more importantly, it’s practical—especially if you’re playing under low lighting conditions, where being able to see everything clearly is essential.
Another setting that caught my attention was the audible selection beep. Touchscreens don’t give you the physical feedback of pressing a button, but by enabling this small feature, you get an audible confirmation that your selection has registered. It’s a tiny tweak, but it changes the way you interact with the keyboard in a way I wasn’t expecting.

While playing with these settings, I realised that some of them, while subtle, actually make a real difference to how efficiently you can navigate your keyboard. One of my favourites is the option to scroll through voice selections using the data entry wheel without it instantly selecting a new voice.
This is a small but hugely useful feature—especially when performing. If you’re in the middle of a song and want to select a new voice at the end of a bar, this lets you scroll through options without the sound suddenly changing until you press “enter”. It’s a tiny workflow improvement, but one that makes a huge difference when you’re playing live.
Another setting that stood out was screen transitions. Yamaha, understandably, includes smooth animations when switching between menus. It looks great, but turning it off actually makes everything feel snappier. If you like fast, instantaneous navigation, this is definitely one to try.
Many Yamaha PSR-SX players never adjust these settings, simply because they don’t know they’re there. And that’s fair enough—this keyboard is absolutely packed with features, and not everything can be front and centre.
But for those who take the time to explore, these hidden tweaks can improve workflow, reduce distractions, and make playing feel more intuitive. Whether it’s tweaking the brightness for stage conditions, speeding up menu navigation, or making voice selection smoother, these small adjustments can help you focus more on the music and less on the menus.
Yamaha even gives you tools like Direct Access, which lets you jump straight to the setting you want without having to dig through endless menus. Features like this are often underused, but once you get the hang of them, they make adjusting settings on the fly incredibly easy.
If you’ve never explored these options before, I’d highly recommend having a play around. Try making small adjustments and see if they improve how you interact with your keyboard.
For me, settings like button brightness, voice selection scrolling, and screen transitions are things I’ll always tweak because they just make playing feel smoother. But every player is different, and that’s the beauty of these keyboards—they’re designed to be customised to suit you.
