We’ve managed to get our hands on a secondhand Yamaha NU1X, and let me tell you, it’s a bit of a beauty. It’s in polished white, looks absolutely stunning, and feels like something you’d find in a concert pianist’s front room. You don’t see these come up used very often, especially not in this condition — so if you’ve been dreaming of a classy hybrid piano, this one’s well worth a look.
Now, for those who don’t know, the NU1X is part of Yamaha’s AvantGrand range — that’s their hybrid piano series, where they’ve blended the authentic feel of a real acoustic piano with the versatility of digital technology.
The keys on this thing are long and balanced just like on an acoustic upright. The mechanism underneath is near-identical to what you’d find in a real piano — it’s got the proper hammers and everything — but instead of strings, the sound is produced digitally using high-quality sampling. It’s like having the best of both worlds: you get the authentic feel of a real piano and the added benefits of digital features like volume control, headphone use, and built-in recording.
And I’ve got to say — this one in white looks particularly lovely. The slow-close lid is a nice touch too. The whole thing just oozes elegance.
You’re not limited to just one piano sound either. Yamaha’s been generous with the voices on this model:
🎹 Standard Grand Piano – beautifully rich from the lowest notes to the highest
🎹 Bösendorfer Imperial – warm, full-bodied, Austrian depth
🎹 Studio Grand – ideal for pop or modern recordings
🎹 Upright Piano – great for something a bit more vintage and characterful
🎹 Piano & Strings – my personal favourite, really lush!
🎹 Jazz Organ – yes please
🎹 Church Organ & Chapel Organ – both deeply atmospheric
They’ve sampled them incredibly well — everything sounds crisp, clear and realistic. You’ll be surprised how expressive it feels.

One of my favourite things about the NU1X is the built-in recording feature. It’s very simple to use — you can record one hand, play it back, and accompany yourself live with the other. Or go all in and record both hands, then layer over the top for a bit of improvisation fun. Great for practising… or showing off a bit!
