The Yamaha PSR-SX600 is a great all-rounder that won’t break the bank – and this one, in particular, is in lovely secondhand condition.
It also happens to be the very first model in Yamaha’s acclaimed SX series – a range that’s proven incredibly popular with players of all levels. Priced at just £499, this one offers huge creative potential in a neat, compact frame.
I’ve always been impressed with how much Yamaha manage to squeeze into their portable keyboards – and the SX600 is no exception.
Right from the start, you’ve got a really expressive piano sound. But dig into the voice selection and you’ll find hundreds of sounds to explore. There are multiple types of piano, vintage suitcase-style electrics, organs, accordions, strings, guitars – even a wide range of synths and pads.
One of my favourites on this particular unit is the concert guitar voice. It uses Yamaha’s Super Articulation technology, which means you hear all those little details that bring a performance to life – string slides, fret buzz, and subtle playing variations.
The strings are particularly lovely too – especially the concert strings patch – and if you like ambient textures, there are some great motion pads that evolve and develop as you play.

The accompaniment styles are another highlight. On the left side of the keyboard, you can activate auto-accompaniment and choose from a huge array of backing styles – everything from upbeat dance grooves to laid-back country, with all the rhythm and harmony built in.
There’s even a Britpop-style rhythm that instantly puts you in mind of a 90s indie band. These backing tracks are musically done, thoughtfully arranged, and they follow your chord changes in real time. It’s like having a band ready to jam whenever you are.
There’s a bright, clear LED screen for navigating your settings and sounds. Live control knobs allow you to adjust things like filters on the fly – great if you enjoy shaping your sound in real time.
If you like to compose or record your ideas, you’ll also be pleased to know the SX600 has a built-in 16-track recording studio. That’s a huge bonus for players who want to build full arrangements without needing a computer.
You can save your favourite settings, transfer them to other keyboards, and really make the instrument your own. It’s a very complete creative setup for the price.

We’ve taken a full set of photos of this exact instrument (Stock ID: #10025) so you can inspect it from every angle.
