If you’ve ever wished your Yamaha Genos or SX keyboard could just read your mind and jump straight to your favourite settings — this one’s for you. I’m David from ePianos, and I’ve been showing a lot of people lately how to get the most out of their assignable buttons. These little guys can be absolute lifesavers once you know what they’re capable of.
If you’re using a Genos 1, you’ll find six assignable buttons on the right-hand side of the panel, and one extra on the left (often set up for rotary speaker by default). On Genos 2, that number jumps up to nine — which is brilliant if you want more quick-access options while you’re playing.
These buttons can be set up as shortcuts to any number of useful pages or features: your mixer, your pedals, metronome on/off, tap tempo, lyrics, registrations — you name it.
The idea is simple: you assign a function you regularly use to one of these buttons, so you’re not digging through menus mid-performance. And trust me, once you’ve tried it, you’ll never go back.

Here’s the trick: press the Direct Access button, then tap the assignable button you want to set up. A menu pops up where you can scroll through loads of options — pedal settings, MIDI controls, mixer pages, you name it. You can even assign it to turn your metronome on and off, or to show the score or lyrics if you’re using them during a gig.
One neat example — I assigned the F button on my Genos to Tap Tempo. Now when I press it, I can just tap the beat in: one, two, three, four — and off we go. Much quicker than hunting around the screen for it.
We’ve had a few customers recently who are blind or partially sighted, and it turns out the assignable buttons are especially helpful in that context. You can assign one of the buttons to toggle the Voice Guide, which gives audible feedback when you press buttons — helping players navigate the keyboard without needing to see the screen. A lovely example of Yamaha making these instruments accessible to more people.

You can do a similar thing with your foot pedals too — assign them to rhythm start/stop, pitch bend, arpeggio hold, vocal harmony, and more. There are nine full pages of assignable options. Just use Direct Access + pedal press and you’ll be in the right menu to set it up.
And when you’re saving your registrations, there’s an option to include your assignable button setup too — handy if you’ve got everything dialled in just the way you like it.
While we’re at it, there’s another little bonus — six buttons running along the bottom of the screen. These work as additional shortcuts to features like the channel mixer and vocal harmony. You can reassign these just like the others to suit your workflow.
We’re big fans of helping players get the most out of their instruments — especially with powerful models like the Genos and SX range. If you’d like us to walk you through setting this up on your own keyboard, or if you’re wondering whether your current model can do it, just get in touch.
