Welcome to Part 1 of my brand-new series all about the Yamaha Smart Pianist app – the must-have companion for your Yamaha digital piano. Whether you’ve just unboxed your first keyboard or you’ve been playing for years, this app opens up a whole new layer of features that many folks don’t even realise exist.
In this first episode, we’re diving into the Piano Room – the first screen you’ll see when launching the app, and the one that acts as your main hub. What you’ll see here depends a lot on which Yamaha model you’re using. For example, on my Yamaha CSP-275 (a smart Clavinova with all the bells and whistles), I’ve got access to loads of editable voices and detailed tone controls. If you’re using something like the Yamaha P-145, you’ll still get a lovely interface and a solid selection of voices – just with fewer deep-dive options. Either way, the Piano Room gives you a powerful, intuitive way to interact with your instrument.
I’ll take you on a guided tour of the Piano Room, including:
Then I dive into the Voice Editor, which is where the magic really happens. If your instrument supports it (like my CSP does), you can tweak settings like:
All of this is presented in gorgeous, easy-to-read graphics – Yamaha really nailed the UI on this.

I’ll also show you how to save your custom piano sound so you can recall it anytime. Once you’ve got your ideal setup, you can even record a quick performance, right within the app – perfect for capturing those moments of inspiration or showing off to your mates.
And for teachers, you’ll love this: the app even shows you a basic sheet music transcription of what you’ve played. A handy tool for analysing students’ performances or brushing up on your own.
If you’re using a Yamaha CSP series piano, you’ll also get access to the fantastic Stream Lights feature – a bit like Guitar Hero, but for real piano learning. It’s a brilliant system that lights up the keys in time with the music, helping learners (of all ages) build confidence and accuracy. I touch on this briefly, and we’ll explore it in more detail in a later video.
I also give a quick look at the metronome features – simple but essential!
The Yamaha Smart Pianist app is available for both iOS and Android devices. It works over USB or Bluetooth (depending on your instrument), and it’s totally free to download.

Comments:
Loved your video on Yamaha Smart Pianist. However I have a CLP920 and a DGX660 neither of which are supported – is there any similar app I can use especially to help get my young granddaughter playing and having fun.
Good question 👍
Smart Pianist isn’t supported on the CLP-920 or DGX-660, but Flowkey is a great alternative – especially for younger players. It works with any piano, listens as you play, and makes learning very visual and fun. Not quite in the same way as smart pianist but it is a great learning tool!
