Music possesses such incredible qualities to transport you to another time and place.
I was struck by a powerful wave of nostalgia this week whilst playing with my Yamaha PSR-SX900 keyboard.
Almost by accident, I hit a chord and something inside me was instantly reminded of a song – or more particularly – a classic, signature keyboard riff – from the musical era of my youth, the 1990s.
Watch the video below and hear for yourself. If the 90s were your formative musical years, you’ll no doubt recognise it.
The opening chords from Underworld’s “Born Slippy” as made popular from being used in the soundtrack to the movie Trainspotting starring Ewan McGregor.
I had huge fun using the Yamaha PSR-SX900’s Voice editing system, which is surprisingly deep with its multiple choices of Insert Effects, including reverbs and delays, and its great selection of synth pads, to achieve that signature sound for the keyboard riff in “Born Slippy”.

I made two custom Voices to suit it – which I think are nearly spot-on to recreate the original sound – and a Registration which I’m making available for free to anyone who owns this model of keyboard or a Yamaha Genos, Genos 2, or PSR-SX700.
All you need to do is email me at sales@epianos.co.uk, and I’ll send it over to you for use on your keyboard.
Go on, enjoy yourself and relive the 90s!
More than anything, I wanted to share this experience because it demonstrates the power of music to move us emotionally and transport us with nostalgia to another time and place, which, although it might sometimes be melancholic, is magical all the same and should be experienced, celebrated, and shared.
I really hope you enjoy the video and the Registration!
