As the days grow shorter and the evenings draw in, it’s easy to slip into the familiar routine of sofa, telly, and a bit of doom-scrolling on the phone. But autumn and winter are actually the very best seasons to start something new – something that feeds the mind and soul. What better way to spend those long, dark nights than filling your home with music?
There’s a secret we pianists know that many of my friends don’t: the piano is one of the healthiest, most mindful alternatives to passive time in front of a screen. Sitting down at the keys offers a calm, absorbing focus. It’s a form of escape, yes, but also a kind of therapy. Even if your playing doesn’t progress quickly, the act itself – the physical touch, the sound, the concentration – is deeply restorative.
Around Christmas, many people feel the pull to make a proper life commitment, whether it’s picking up a hobby they once loved or finally starting something they’ve always dreamed of. The piano fits perfectly. It’s an indoor pursuit, perfectly suited to the colder months, and it offers something far more lasting than a box-set binge.

One of the joys of modern digital pianos is that they simply work. Unlike traditional pianos, which require regular tuning (especially when the house heating goes on and off), a digital piano never drifts out of tune. Just switch it on and it’s ready -every time.
For those sharing a home (or with neighbours close by), headphones are invaluable. Personally, I love the cosy feeling of a good set of headphones delivering that pure piano sound straight into my ears. On certain Yamaha models, the binaural sampling creates an astonishing 3D spatial effect – it feels like you’re sat in front of a grand piano in a concert hall, even though you’re in your pyjamas at home.
If you’re completely new to playing – or if you want to rediscover the joy quickly – Yamaha’s CSP series has some wonderful tools to get you going. The LED Stream Lights sit just above the keys and guide your fingers, lighting up to show you what to play. Combine this with the ability to load in your favourite songs from your own device, and suddenly you’re playing along with music that actually means something to you.
It’s not about grinding through “Chopsticks”; it’s about connecting with those pieces that remind you of a happier time, a loved one, or a cherished memory.
🎥 I’ve put together a review of the Yamaha CSP-295 where I showcase this in action – you can watch it here:
So if you’re tempted, I’d encourage you to give yourself the opportunity this autumn and winter. Step away from the telly, put the phone down, and sit at the piano instead. It’s one of the best decisions you can make for your mental and emotional wellbeing. Music offers far more than entertainment – it’s a way to connect, to reflect, to relive memories, and to create new ones.
✨ Why not make this the season you let the piano into your home?
