There’s a small section on the Clavinova that often gets overlooked – yet it can make a real difference to how you play and how confident you feel at the keyboard.
It sits just above the style control area, and it includes four simple controls:
Metronome, Tap Tempo, Transpose, and Tempo.
At first glance, they don’t look particularly exciting. But once you start using them properly, they can quietly transform your playing.
The metronome is one of those features that many people are aware of, but don’t always use consistently.
When you’re playing along with a backing style, it can sometimes be difficult to feel exactly where the first beat of the bar sits. That’s where the metronome becomes really useful.
You can:
That bell feature, in particular, gives you a clear reference point instead of guessing where the bar begins.
You can also customise the sound – or even have a voice count you in – which can be surprisingly helpful when you’re trying to stay locked in.
Tap Tempo is simple but very effective.
Rather than setting a tempo number and hoping it feels right, you can tap in the speed you want – and the Clavinova follows you.
It’s ideal for playing along with music or finding a tempo that feels comfortable straight away.

Transpose is one of the most useful features on the instrument.
It allows you to change key without changing how you play. So you can stay in a comfortable key, but sound like you’re playing somewhere completely different.
It’s perfect for:
And when you’re finished, a quick reset brings everything back to normal.
The tempo buttons let you adjust speed easily, and once it appears on screen, the data wheel gives you quick, precise control.
It’s a small feature, but it makes everything feel more fluid and responsive.
These controls aren’t about flashy features.
They’re about:
And that’s often what makes the biggest difference to your playing.
