One of the questions I get asked a lot is whether you can change how the keys feel on the Yamaha PSR-SX920. It is a fair question, especially if you are moving from another keyboard and want something that feels comfortable under your hands.
In the video below, Chris shows where to find the Touch Curve settings on the Yamaha PSR-SX920 and explains what they actually do.
The honest answer is: you cannot mechanically change the physical feel of the keys.
There is no setting that makes the key action itself heavier, lighter, firmer, or softer. The keys are physically the same.
But you can change how the keyboard responds to your playing.
That is where the Touch Curve setting comes in.
Touch Curve changes the relationship between how hard you play and how the sound responds.
So although it does not change the actual key mechanism, it can make the keyboard feel more natural to you because the sound reacts differently under your fingers.
On the Yamaha PSR-SX920, the options are:
Normal
The standard setting for most players.
Soft 1 / Soft 2
Useful if you play with a lighter touch and want the sound to respond more easily.
Hard 1 / Hard 2
Better if you naturally play more firmly and want a wider sense of control before the sound fully opens up.
It is a small setting, but it can make a surprisingly big difference.

Although this video is filmed on the Yamaha PSR-SX920, the same idea applies to other Yamaha arranger keyboards with a similar operating system.
So this will also be useful if you have a PSR-SX720, PSR-SX900, PSR-SX700, Genos 1, Genos 2, or similar PSR-SX models.
The screens may vary slightly from model to model, but the principle is the same: you are changing the touch sensitivity, not the physical key action.
If you are considering a Yamaha PSR-SX920, PSR-SX720, Genos 2, or another Yamaha arranger keyboard, we are always happy to help.
We also offer part exchange and trade-ins, so if you already have a keyboard at home and want to know what it might be worth against something newer, just get in touch.

You cannot physically change the keys on the PSR-SX920, but with the Touch Curve settings, you may be able to make the keyboard respond in a way that feels much better for the way you naturally play.
