Have you ever stopped to wonder what music truly means?
It’s a question I’ve pondered many times, and recently, I had an experience that brought me closer to an answer. It was one of those moments that felt both profoundly moving and grounding—an emotional reminder of music’s unique power.
It all started when I was playing along to one of my favourite songs, Someone Like You by Van Morrison, on YouTube.
As often happens, I found myself scrolling through the comments section. What I discovered there stopped me in my tracks. People were pouring out their hearts—sharing deeply personal stories about why this song resonated so much with them.
Some spoke of heartbreak and loss, others of cherished memories, and many shared how this song had brought them healing, comfort, or even a sense of peace. It was striking, even overwhelming at times, to read these raw, beautiful, funny, and achingly sad insights into the lives of strangers. I couldn’t stop scrolling.
This experience brought home something I’ve always felt about music: it connects us. It’s not just about melodies or lyrics—it’s a lifeline, a source of solace, and sometimes a bridge to understanding ourselves and others.
I wanted to share this extraordinary moment with you.
So, I decided to capture it in a way that brings the comments and the music together.
Using the Bluetooth feature on the Yamaha CLP Clavinova, I streamed the YouTube video through the piano’s speakers and played along. As I played, I displayed some of those heartfelt comments on the screen to show how deeply music touches us all.
You can see for yourself in the videos I’ve included here.
I hope they resonate with you as much as they did with me—and perhaps even help you find your own answer to the question, What is the meaning of music?
Take a look, and let me know your thoughts. Maybe, like me, you’ll find yourself reflecting on the profound ways music connects us all.

Thank you so much Chris for the video and the scrolling of messages alongside. Really moving to read them along with the music. I enjoyed your playing very much. Music certainly has the ability to move one to tears. It has played a dominant part in my life from early years with a father who was an accomplished pianist and flautist, involved in amateur orchestras and small groups. I was a church choir boy aged ten with what I was told was a good voice. Singing lessons aside I was never one for solo performance being rather shy at the time.
My real musical background started when I was eleven (1959) when I joined the school brass band as a cornet player. I went on to be a member of the Bristol City Youth Band. In my early twenties I was a member of The Shaftesbury Crusade Brass Band (long gone unfortunately) entering national contests to first division, as well as hosting some of the country’s top brass bands at concerts in the city’s main concert hall. I have often been moved to tears as well as emotional highs during these times. The power of music, once revealed, can be truly transformative.
There followed thirty or so years without playing music but still loving various musical genres.
It wasn’t until the 1990’s that I first discovered keyboards and purchased a Roland E-70 which I kept for over 30 years. Self-taught, I no doubt have fallen into many bad habits but have enjoyed so much the ability to play
‘music minus one’ or ‘many’ in the case of a keyboard. I now own a Tyros4 which is a truly amazing piece of kit
and enjoy many hours of playing privately at home. The quality of the instrument sounds is awesome and has revived my love of participating in the process of making music.
From personal experience I feel that we all have some innate sense of what music can do. You might almost say it has a similar ability of drugs/stimulants to alter minds and create emotional responses. (ear-worms anyone!).
If I was asked who nowadays has the power to create great music that stirs my emotions, I would say it would be Karl Jenkins who I stumbled upon quite by accident when recovering from cancer. His music, atonal in most instances, brought out so many emotions in me that I think it truly helped get my head around life and what was happening to me at the time. That was 12 years ago and his music still inspires me in so many ways.
Again thank you so much for all your music videos.
What a wonderful message, Simon—thank you so much for sharing your story. It’s truly moving to hear how music has played such a profound role in your life, from your early years singing in a church choir to your journey through brass bands and, more recently, with your Tyros4. The passion and emotion in your words really resonate with me, and it’s incredible to hear how music has been both a companion and a source of healing for you, especially during difficult times like your recovery from cancer.
I completely agree with your thoughts on the power of music—it truly is transformative. It’s amazing how it can transport us, evoke memories, and even provide a sense of connection, whether we’re playing, listening, or simply reflecting. Karl Jenkins’ music is indeed remarkable; his ability to weave emotion into such unique compositions is awe-inspiring, and I’m so glad his work has been a source of comfort and inspiration for you.
Your journey with the Roland E-70 and now the Tyros4 reminds me why instruments like these hold such special value—they open up entire worlds of creativity and joy, even for those of us who might not consider ourselves “trained” musicians. The beauty lies in the love of making music, and it’s clear you have that in abundance.
Thank you again for your kind words about the video and my playing—it means the world to know it resonated with you. I’ll keep your inspiring story in mind as I continue sharing music. Wishing you many more hours of joy and discovery with your Tyros4, and please do keep in touch—I’d love to hear more about your musical adventures!
