There were smoke signals from Yamaha HQ on Friday, 20th October as they released a short ‘teaser’ video showing what one might easily surmise to be a new version of their current flagship arranger keyboard: The Yamaha Genos.
You might well be thinking; is the long-awaited successor to the Yamaha Genos nearly upon us?
Later in this blog, we’ll look in detail at what the ‘teaser’ video has revealed.
But for now, watch the teaser video below and see for yourself.
A teaser video is a short clip that gives people a quick look at something new, like an upcoming film, product, or event.
It doesn’t show everything, just enough to spark interest and make people want to see or learn more.
It’s like a mini-preview to get everyone excited.
[genos-two]The video proclaims that ‘Something big is coming…’ and that it will be on November 15th this year.
Apart from that, being a ‘teaser’, it hasn’t actually revealed very much!
Or, so I thought…
Let’s look a little closer at that video to see what we can deduce, shall we?

In this first scene, the man in the video is seen opening a box – which presumably contains the keyboard.
Pretty straightforward, right? Perhaps.
But, I noticed two things about this which might reveal a little more:
The man in the video is reaching downward toward the floor – which could indicate that the box contains a small, lightweight keyboard and not a heavy, furniture-like instrument like the much larger Yamaha CLP, CSP, or CVP models.
Whatever this keyboard is, you might expect that it’ll be designed with portability in mind.
This is supported by the following scene (pictured below) where the man is looking down into the box from above.

In this screenshot of the teaser video, the player’s finger is about to come and press the circular button in the middle of the picture.
For current Yamaha Genos players, it might look strikingly familiar as the configuration of buttons is very similar to the Genos itself with the On/Off switch situated to the left of the Master Volume dial.
If you look closely, you can just make out the word ‘Volume’ above the larger dial which, again, would indicate that this is either a picture of a Genos or that a new model has a very similar keyboard panel.
Below, you’ll see a photograph I took of the current Yamaha Genos in our showroom.
I’ve tried to match the angle of the teaser video shot.

The two keyboards pictured certainly look very similar, don’t they?
As you can see, on the Genos in our showroom, the buttons are configured in a very similar way.
The small, circular On/Off switch is slightly recessed, the Master Volume dial is of a very similar size and protrusion.
One small difference is that the two rectangle buttons below the Master Volume dial, which have the markings for the Upper Octave and Reset controls on our showroom Genos, don’t appear to have any on the ‘teaser’ video image.
It’s entirely possible that they’ve been edited out using Photoshop or a similar image editing program.
Remember, the aim of a ‘teaser’ video is to leave us wanting a little more and the ambiguity might be designed to throw us off the scent!

The star of our video is now preparing to play his first notes but, before doing so, he places a pair of headphones over his ears.
Might this be an indication that, just like the original Genos, this new keyboard won’t have built-in speakers?
There’s something else interesting in this picture too.
Look in the background. What do you see?
There’s the headstock of an acoustic guitar, which on its own might be innocuous, however, taken in the context of having a new keyboard in the same room may indicate that the keyboard will be one suitable for a multi-instrumentalist, a singer-songwriter, or composer.
In other words, you might deduce that this new keyboard will be an arranger model in the same class as the original Yamaha Genos.
In this scene, what’s notable is that our player isn’t standing on a stage, in a recording studio, or even busking in the street.
He’s apparently playing at home in his office or music room.
What might this tell us?
It would be a sensible guess to say that this new model, whatever it may be, is predominantly aimed at people who like to play in their homes rather than on stage.
Not that playing on stage would be impossible, as indeed it wasn’t on the Genos, however, in terms of how this new model is being presented in this ‘teaser’ video, you might surmise that home players will be well catered for.
In this scene, after taking somewhat of a dramatic backlift, we see the player’s hand striking the keys.
And it’s the keys themselves that caught my attention.
Look at the end of the keys, that’s to say the part that’s nearest the player.
The key shape is exactly the same as the current Genos model with its tapered body that gets slightly thinner toward the end.
And, if you look close enough, you can even see the tell-tell notch around an inch from the end of the key.
If the keyboard represented in this ‘teaser’ video is a new model, it appears to use the existing Yamaha Genos FSX keyboard mechanism.
Who knows? Perhaps this new model might be available in more lengths than only 76-note, like the Genos.
This is something I wrote about in a recent article here.

This part of the ‘teaser’ video comes at the end and gives some vital clues about a potential new model.
Firstly, whatever is coming, it seems clear that on Wednesday, November, 15th something significant will be happening.
Will a new model be released?
Will it simply be more ‘teaser’ videos?
We’ll have to wait and see.
What could that possibly mean?
Here are a few options:
A Sequel: The most common interpretation would be that this is a sequel to a previously released keyboard model or software. The “2” would indicate that this is the second version or iteration of the product.
A Countdown: The “2” could also signify a countdown to a larger reveal or event related to the keyboard. Subsequent teasers might display “1” and then finally a full reveal.
Dual Features: The number might indicate dual features of the keyboard, such as two types of key actions, two sound engines, or a keyboard that serves a dual purpose.
Misdirection: It’s also possible that the “2” is meant to mislead or create discussion and speculation among enthusiasts, with the actual meaning being revealed later.
It would be easy to surmise that this video, with the strong hints that it contains, means that we will be seeing a brand-new flagship arranger keyboard from Yamaha very soon, and who knows?, perhaps it will be the successor to the illustrious Yamaha Genos.
Whatever it is, the official news that ‘Something big is coming…’ and that it will be on November 15th, makes it likely that something of significance about this new keyboard will be revealed on that date.
Perhaps it’ll even be available to buy for Christmas!
We hope Yamaha to release more details for us soon.

Comments:
It’s a shame the headphones are wired. No Bluetooth. Would love to see WiFi on the keyboard for sharing and installing new updates or sounds.
I am amazed that Yamaha are keeping this a big secret, Especially with Epianos being a Yamaha agent and Stockist of all Yamaha products .The agents are usually the first people to hear of any new new product, Looks like we will have to wait till November the 15th with all our hopes pinned on the news from Yamaha that a new Genos 2 is going to be available. I have read on the Yamaha website that Yamaha are struggling with supplier problems, being the shortage of semi conductors which means all instruments what use this particular electronic item will not be in full production as Yamaha would like. Chris what you have wrote regarding the teaser video, the clues and what you picked up from this. You may have to become a detective.
It’s on You Tube in a lot more detail. The multi pad control now has eight buttons and is in a new position where there is a blank space to the right next to the USB socket. It also says it is USB 3 why have Yamaha not USB type C?. Regards John Dupont.
I own a yamaha genus which I love and can’t stop
Wanting to play. My wife died recently so playing the genus is a great comfort for me. I still have a few things
To work out how to transfer from play list to the buttons on front panel.
Looking Forward to a new keyboard with better Strings and good Presets.
When will yo be taking Pre-Orders??
