Modern Style, Compact Design

In response to changes to the design of the modern home, the Yamaha YDP-s34 is purposefully compact and minimalist in style, and yet still retains a sleek, modernistic look, suitable for any decor.

The YDPS34 is particularly-suited to students living in halls or shared accommodation, where space is at a premium, as the key cover folds down to form a flat surface, ideal for doubling as a desk or laptop stand.

Yamaha believes in a piano design to suit all circumstances; every pianist should be able to enjoy a great instrument, whatever space they have available.

An Authentic Experience

In spite of it’s minimalism, the Yamaha YDPS34 is packed with technology designed to offer the most realistic grand piano-playing experience possible in this price range.

The Yamaha CFXIII 9′ concert grand is sampled beautifully over a full 88-key range here, all facilitated by Yamaha’s GHS (Graded Hammer Standard) key mechanism, complete with a fully-mechanical key action.

Yamaha are piano makers first and foremost – and the Yamaha YDPS34 certainly benefits from this expertise.

YDPS-34 | Features

Yamaha’s Intelligent Acoustic Control (IAC) is a technology which allows for the YDP-S34 to be played at low volumes, with no loss in high or low frequency fidelity. This means practice at a considerate volume without sacrificing the richness of the sound of the instrument – a crucial aspect.

The Yamaha YDPS34 features Stereophonic Optimiser technology, a Yamaha concept, which allows for less fatigue whilst playing through headphones via the introduction of ‘space’ between the player and the earpiece. This also provides the added benefit of a more naturalistic sound for the player, as opposed to the synthetic and harsh sound traditionally experienced through direct to headphone playing.

Sound & Versatility

The Yamaha YDPS34 features 2 8 watt amplifiers, powering 2 x 12 speakers, and a sampling polyphony of 192, delivering a rich and balanced sound across a huge range of available tones.

The YDP-S34 can be connected to a DAW via USB to host, allowing you to control your VST/AU instruments with the instrument’s keys, blending authenticity and versatility with ease.

Connect and control the features of the YDP-S34 with your smart device using Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app, which is even capable of showing you the chords for songs in your iOS music library so you can accompany your favourite artists.

Yamaha YDPS34 | Our verdict

The YamahaYDPS34 is the minimalist analog of the Yamaha YDP-144, featuring the exact same spec – speakers, tone generation, key action, etc – albeit in a more compact format.

The YDP-S34 marks an entry point into Yamaha’s non-modular (i.e. fixed base & pedals only) digital pianos and is the jumping-off point for the Yamaha Arius range, which could reasonably be considered as the ‘baby Clavinova’ series.

As a result, you can expect the most basic elements of Yamaha’s considerable expertise with the YDP-S34 – which is certainly not a ‘commiseration prize, when you consider how the instrument is priced, and who it is priced for (namely complete beginners).

If space and price are proving to be a premium, then the Yamaha YDPS34 is a good fit in both senses – a superb-value instrument that will fit just about anywhere.
