The Yamaha YDP144 draws many parallels with the next model up in the range, the Yamaha YDP164, but recovers some of the additional expense by using a slightly different key action and quieter speakers.

A Compact Grand Piano for Any Home
The Yamaha YDP144 features a fully-fledged upright piano design, complete with 3 foot pedals, base and stand, in a compact, minimalist format. Yamaha’s expertise as piano makers first and foremost shines through from the moment you turn the YDP-144 on. From the meticulously-sampled array of voices, including that of the legendary Yamaha CFXIII 9′ concert grand, to the richness of its speakers, the YDP-144 delivers with a truly-authentic grand piano-playing experience.
YDP-144 | Key Action
The YDP-144 features Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) system, which offers a fully-operational working key mechanism for maximum authenticity. Matte black key tops ensure a tactile distinction from white keys as you play, and ‘grading’ ensures a realistic reproduction of the variation in resistance (or ‘weight’) differing from low to high notes, such as you would find on a concert grand piano.
To avoid the traditional listening fatigue players tend to encounter as a result of practicing through headphones, the Yamaha YDP144 features Yamaha’s Stereophonic Optimiser technology, which provides ‘space’ between the player and the earpiece, creating the impression of playing without headphones at all. Intelligent Acoustic Control, or IAC, protects the balance of low, medium and high-end frequencies when the volume of the instrument is reduced, allowing you to enjoy the YDP-144 at all volumes, however quietly you choose to play. Using it’s USB to host functionality, you can connect to your DAW software and use the keys of the Yamaha YDP-144 to play the VST/AU instruments within your recording software, combining total versatility with authentic piano touch.
Yamaha YDP144 & Smart Pianist
Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app, free for iOS and Android, allows you to access the features of the Yamaha YDP144 via your smart device, as well as other features – such as the ability to convert music from your iOS music library into chords, allowing you to play along with your favourite music.
Yamaha YDP144 / YDP-144 – our verdict
The Yamaha YDP144 is the most affordable of Yamaha’s ‘Clavinova-style’ pianos and delivers the raw elements of a great Yamaha digital piano to the player. We’ve always considered the Arius range as a ‘baby Clavinova’ series, and the YDP-144 is a great demonstration of why, for so many years, Yamaha are the go-to brand for that first ‘serious’ investment in a beginner instrument. The touch and sound are excellent – far better than any of its peers – and the simplified interface is geared to help the player focus on practice as opposed to experimentation. The cabinet and pedals of the YDP-144 provide the aesthetic sensibilities of a ‘real’ piano; the design is as subtle and universal as a small acoustic upright or minipiano, so it should easily find a home in most living rooms or bedrooms.
