Yamaha PSR-SX900 – read our review here

The Yamaha PSR-SX900 is the new benchmark for portable live performance arranger keyboards and shares much of its DNA with the flagship Yamaha Genos workstation.

PSR-SX-900 | Sound

The Yamaha SX900 is about creativity and diversity, which is why it features nearly 1400 instrument sounds, including the Revo! drums from Genos, Yamaha’s most advanced percussion engine yet.

The PSR-SX-900 features well over 500 built-in musical styles, so you’ll never be short of inspiration. You’ll discover features such as vocal harmony that allow you to layer your voice to add depth to your recordings, multi-pads which will allow both MIDI and WAV data to be sampled for unique expression, and the Chord Looper, which allows for the recording of a short looped phrase within a style, offering even greater opportunity to experiment with your multitrack recordings on the PSR-SX-900, as well as your live performances.

A bi-amplified output section and a dedicated tweeter provide the Yamaha SX900 with a powerful and crisp speaker system, which is purposefully cambered to optimally project the sound outward to you and your audience. Go a step further, and connect the Yamaha KS-Sw100 to the dedicated sub out for a warm and rich bass response

Interface

The PSR-SX-900 features the same interface and touchscreen system as the Genos, delivering a bright, crisp 7-inch display from any angle, as well as a responsive and intuitive touch menu system.

The Yamaha SX900 is geared to be customised to your unique requirements and offers 6 assignable buttons that can be set to any of the instrument’s functions. Similarly, the Playlist feature replaces the Music Finder, allowing you to have more control over the sounds you use when playing a song (no longer restricting you to OTS sounds), further freeing up your creativity.

The PSR-SX-900’s joystick offers intuitive pitch and modulation control. Now you can play rapid trills, dynamic pitch bends, and finely-nuanced modulation—all from a single, easily-configured controller.
The FSB keyboard, as featured on the flagship Genos, is also implemented on the Yamaha SX900, providing a tactile and precise key response.

Other Features:

Style Section Reset

YouTube video

When playing Styles, easily jump to the beginning of the bar on the SX-900 by pressing the [RESET/TAP TEMPO] button. A valuable feature for accompanying singers or performing music with varying time signatures.

Style Assembly

Styles are made up of many instrument Parts, such as drums, bass, guitar, piano etc. In Style Assembly on the PSR-SX-900, it’s easy to explore, audition and combine Parts from any Style to create your own personal accompaniments.

Expansive Soundfield Speakers

The speakers of the Yamaha PSR-SX900 feature a polypropylene diaphragm with an excellent response that provides crisp, high-quality tone, while a new diaphragm structure delivers balanced sound throughout a broad listening area.

PSR-SX-900 | Connectivity

The Yamaha SX900 features built-in Bluetooth connectivity, allowing it to connect to your Bluetooth-compatible audio device and play audio through its built-in speakers. The addition of the aforementioned Yamaha KS-SW100 subwoofer enhances playback even further, giving you deep, warm bass whilst freeing up the internal speakers to handle crisp mids and highs.

Connect your microphone or guitar to the SX-900, and use the on-board menu to make adjustments that are specifically suited for that input type. This turns the PSR-SX-900 into your own portable backing group and provides limitless creative possibilities for both recording and performance.

Yamaha SX900 | Our Verdict

The Yamaha SX900 is an outstanding instrument in its own right, but even more so when you consider it’s parity with the Genos, at a significantly lower price point. The PSR-SX-900 doesn’t have all the expressive cards to play like the Genos does, but it’s certainly very, very close.

We install a lot of unique additional content onto every Yamaha SX900 that we sell, including additional songs, registrations and expansion packs, and we even provide a DVD guide to help you find this content and make use of it, right out of the box!

The Genos will always have the hardware to pull ahead, but the PSR-SX-900 simply cannot disappoint, if budget and/or absolute compactness are key factors.

To achieve the best from the PSR-SX-900, we would definitely recommend adding the Yamaha KS-Sw100, which delivers warm and full bass to your performances.
