The Yamaha MODX M range gives players a choice between two very different keyboard actions, and that is something that naturally raises questions.
On paper, it is easy enough to list the names of the mechanisms, but that does not really tell you how they feel when you actually sit down and play.
So I spent time moving between all three models, exploring different sounds, registers and playing styles, to get a proper sense of how each keybed responds and how that shapes the playing experience.

One important thing to mention before we go further is that the MODX M7 and M6 share the same key mechanism. They differ in size, but the feel under the fingers is the same. The M8, however, uses a completely different action.
The MODX M8 uses Yamaha’s GHS key mechanism, which stands for Graded Hammer Standard. This is a weighted action designed to resemble the feel of an acoustic piano, with the keys heavier in the lower register and lighter in the upper register.
It is one of Yamaha’s more portable hammer style actions, helping to keep the MODX M8 manageable in weight while still delivering that familiar resistance under the fingers.
The M7 and M6 use Yamaha’s FSB semi weighted action. Yamaha do not officially spell out what the letters stand for, but in practical terms this is a balanced, synth style keybed. The resistance is even across the keyboard, and the design favours speed and agility rather than piano style weight.
Right from the start, these models are offering two distinct playing approaches.

Sitting down at the M8, the weighted action immediately felt substantial and grounded. The keys have a realistic sense of resistance, and the graded feel across the keyboard gives a strong sense of physical connection when shaping phrases.
Moving to the M7, the overall layout felt familiar, but the response under the fingers was clearly lighter. The keys react quickly and evenly, but without the deeper physical feedback of a hammer action. That meant I had to adjust my touch slightly, particularly when moving between softer and louder dynamics.
It is worth noting that all MODX models are highly velocity sensitive, so the difference is not about whether you can play expressively. It is about how the key mechanism influences the way that expression is delivered.

In the middle and lower registers, the weighted GHS action on the M8 gave a strong sense of control and stability. Shaping phrases and building supporting bass lines felt natural and predictable.
On the M7 and M6, the lighter FSB action brought a different kind of responsiveness, especially in the upper register. Faster passages and more agile parts felt effortless, but the reduced resistance in the mid and lower ranges required a little more adjustment in touch to achieve the same sense of control.
Neither approach is inherently better. They simply encourage slightly different ways of interacting with the instrument.
The semi weighted FSB action really comes into its own when speed and endurance matter. Fast synth lines, bright upper register parts and layered textures feel fluid and easy under the fingers.
There is also a practical benefit. The absence of a hammer mechanism makes the M7 and M6 physically lighter instruments. Compared to the 88 note M8, the 76 note M7 in particular is much easier to carry and position on stage, which can be a major factor for live players.

The M8’s GHS action will appeal most to players who want a keyboard that behaves more like a traditional weighted instrument, particularly when playing expressive piano based parts.
The M6 and M7, with their semi weighted FSB action, suit players who prioritise versatility, speed and portability, and who spend more time exploring synth textures, layers and evolving sounds.
Both approaches pair beautifully with the MODX sound engine and features like the Super Knob. The difference lies in how the keybed shapes your physical connection to those sounds.
