Yamaha Genos – read our review here

Yamaha Genos is the new flagship arranger keyboard from Yamaha, replacing the Tyros series as their most advanced keyboard instrument yet.

The Yamaha Genos is both a user-friendly and incredibly advanced instrument.

To get the most from it, it’s important to have expert support on hand to guide you through your initial learning curve, until you come to understand the flow of the touchscreen interface, and how to achieve total functionality with it. When a Yamaha Genos comes from the factory, its contents are limited to just sounds and styles.

When we sell a Yamaha Genos we include lots of upgrades and content unique to Genos Tipsters at ePianos:

We update the firmware so that your new Yamaha Genos is running on the latest version
We load in 600 registrations into the Genos which give you sound set ups in your 10 registration bank buttons for different genres of music – these include our 8 latest Registration Packs
We also load in 235 extra styles which originated from Tyros 5, but haven’t been included in the Genos
We add all 1825 of the Tyros 5 music finder songs into the Genos ‘playlist’, these can be searched to get 4 set-ups for all of these popular songs
Finally we load in 15 new playlists which allow you to scroll through lists of songs that go together in a medley
To make using your new Yamaha Genos easier to understand we even include a DVD showing where all the key features are, and how to find all the features above.

The Genos Tipsters

David and Chris (a.k.a The Genos Tipsters) are the foremost authority on all things Genos.

From the first whispers of the release of the Yamaha Genos, their primary focus was on taking their own tried and tested – and hugely successful – Tyros Tipsters format, and applying it to the Genos, to create the most concise and user-friendly guide anywhere on the market for this brilliant instrument.

Taking several months to film and perfect, the guide comprises over 8 hours of video and more than 200 pages of written content, making it the perfect addition to the purchase of your Genos.

About Yamaha Genos

The Yamaha Genos is the successor to the highly-revered Tyros family of keyboards, and represents Yamaha’s new flagship workstation.

Everything about the Genos hardware has been conceived from the ground-up – there is no residual technology from Tyros in its DNA; everything from the sound engine to the display is completely revised and revolutionised.

But the Yamaha Genos still retains the key component which made the Tyros family of instruments so popular – ease of use. In fact, with the introduction of a crisp, bright, 9-inch touch screen, navigating the Yamaha Genos is effortless. Registration buttons, intros and endings – everything you’d gotten used to with Tyros is still in a familiar place, surrounded by the exciting new controls and features introduced on the Genos.

Yamaha Genos | Sound Quality

The quality of each and every Genos voice is outstanding. From the rich and beautifully-crisp Yamaha CFXIII concert grand, to the lush and full Kino Strings, to the punchy and striking Revo! Drums – it’s clear from the off that Yamaha’s extensive research and development department has produced something very special with the Yamaha Genos.

Articulation Element Modeling (AEM) is a technology which models the idiosyncrasies of musical instruments. For example, in the real world, a drummer never plays each beat with the exact same voicing – there are subtle, but perceptible, differences in each hit – and the Yamaha Genos models this with unparalleled accuracy, producing realistic and naturalistic results every time.

Genos Effects & Key Features

The Genos is equipped with a completely new DSP (digital signal processing) engine, featuring Reverb, Distortion, Rotary Speaker, Compressor and much more.

Yamaha has even modelled the ‘warm’ characteristics of analog circuitry for the Yamaha Genos, using the same VCM as they employ on their high-end mixing consoles. Combined with a stunning and easy-to-use interface, it’s never been easier to create your perfect sound.

Vocal Harmony and Synth Vocoder allow you to apply dynamic effects to your voice as you sing. Use Vocal Harmony to add rich layering to your voice, or the Vocoder to use the unique timbre of your voice with synthesizer and other sounds.

Choose from over 200 arpeggios to enhance and augment your playing. The wide variety of arpeggios available on the Genos can be manipulated using the Live Control knobs, allowing you to craft your performance in real time.

The Yamaha Genos makes it simple to record your performance as either .WAV audio or SMF (standard MIDI file) using ‘Quick Recording’. For more advanced recording requirements, Multi Recording delivers a 16-track MIDI sequencer with real-time and step-time functionality.

Store you recordings on the huge onboard hard drive, or using the USB ports to save to an external flash drive.

Keyboard Action

The Genos features an FSX premium keyboard mechanism, with aftertouch. Each key of the Genos is precision-engineered for maximum stability and fast response

More Features

Use ‘Direct Access’ to quickly and easily assign functions to keys and pedals. Multi Pads allow you to incorporate short phrases of rhythms or audio in your performances.

You can even assign your own functions to keys, customising the Genos to suit your own unique workflow.

Audio Out

The Digital Audio Converter or ‘DAC’ inside the Yamaha Genos is Yamaha’s highest-fidelity sound system ever used in a keyboard instrument.

Offering a 32bit quality output, you can be sure that your sound will emerge with clear and round definition across a wide range of frequencies – the Genos will always cut through the mix.

Genos | Our Verdict

Having sold several hundred Genos (and counting!) at the time of writing, we feel as though we are in a unique position to assess its reception with the public.

In short – the Yamaha Genos has been a resounding success.

Genos has given everyone from the Tyros-era enough familiarity and content to allow for a comfortable transition, without tethering itself to the Tyros name, and this has resulted in an ‘escape’ to something far more powerful and versatile from Yamaha; an outstanding and revised instrument which both delivers and builds upon a twenty-year Tyros legacy, and massively so.

Our GenosTipsters USB, included with the Genos we sell, further enhances the experience by incorporating the compatible content of Tyros 5 – including music finder songs and style packs – into a brand new library of exciting new sounds and backings.
