On Thursday, June 30th, 2022, Korg launched their new flagship arranger keyboard: The Korg Pa5X. It was one of the most hotly anticipated keyboards of 2022 and is now expected to rival the Yamaha Genos.

For many Yamaha Genos owners, two big questions spring to mind.
Firstly, ‘Should I trade in my Yamaha Genos for a Korg Pa5X?’ (You can read my opinion on our blog by clicking here).
Secondly, ‘Will Yamaha release a Genos 2 to rival the new Korg Pa5X?’.
It’s the second question that I will give you my thoughts about in this article.

To begin with, let’s have a look at the intervals between previous flagship keyboard launches from Yamaha.
And most recently, the Yamaha Genos was launched in 2017.
As you can see, the typical interval between keyboard launches has been 3 years.
This means that the period of time since the Genos launched until now (nearly 5 years) has been the longest without a new flagship model being released by Yamaha.
You could easily surmise that we are due a ‘Genos 2’ imminently.

However, these are not normal times and I think expectations of a ‘Genos 2’ might be premature.
Why? Well, let me explain.
The covid pandemic, global inflation, the war in Ukraine, and a particularly disruptive fire in a Japanese semi-conductor factory could all combine to delay the release of a new flagship keyboard from Yamaha.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m as excited as anyone about seeing what Yamaha can do to rival the new Korg Pa5X keyboard but I worry that we’ll have a bit longer to wait.

One theory that I’ve heard is that Yamaha may issue a substantial software update to the Genos that will add many new features, functions, and sounds.
This isn’t entirely unprecedented as they launched the ‘Genos Version 2.0’ software update to much fanfare back in autumn 2019.
See David’s video all about it below.

David explains the benefits of Yamaha's massive 2.0 software update to its flagship Genos keyboard.
A significant software/firmware update isn’t quite as exciting as an entirely new keyboard, is it?
Should an update happen as I describe, I only hope that the update really does include a very large number of new Voices, Styles, features, and functions.
In fact, I wonder whether any of my wishes from my blog entitled ‘Genos 2? – My hopes for Yamaha’s next flagship arranger keyboard.’ will come true. (You can click here to read the article).
While we patiently wait for any official news from our friends at Yamaha about a new keyboard release, it’s well worth having a look at the aforementioned Korg Pa5X.
If you are comfortable using your Genos, then you’ll find using the Korg Pa5X very easy. As I mentioned in my article, I can see the Yamaha Genos’s influence in its simplicity of use.
In comparison to the Genos (2017), the Korg Pa5X is a much newer keyboard (2022) and it’s no surprise that so many people are making the change.

One thing is for sure. Keyboard players have been treated to some excellent new products over the past few years.
There was the Yamaha PSR-SX series. In particular, the PSR-SX700 & PSR-SX900 that use the same operating system as the Yamaha Genos.
I grew particularly fond of the Yamaha PSR-SX900 when I had one in my garden shed during the covid lockdowns. I made a number of videos that you can see here.

Take care, everyone!

Hi Tipsters
You can put me down now for a Genos 2/3 whatever it is called.
All i can say is the Genos at the moment outweighs all the competition.
If a new Genos arrives count me in
All the Best

I agree… the GENOS is aged and I’m waiting to upgrade from my TYROS 5. Just a matter of time I suppose.

Good morning!
Will we see the new Yamaha Genos 2 at the end of 2023?
Best regards
