Why Is The Yamaha MONTAGE M Better Than The MODX M? A Simple Explanation

Jul 15, 2026
8 min read

Let’s start with the important bit: the Yamaha MODX M is not rubbish. Far from it.

It is a seriously powerful synth for the money, and for a lot of musicians it will be more than enough keyboard.

You get a huge amount of Yamaha’s flagship sound world, including AWM2, FM-X and AN-X sound engines, loads of live performance features, a massive sound library and enough buttons, lights and cleverness to make you feel like you’ve accidentally been hired by NASA.

But people still ask the obvious question: if the MODX M has so much of the MONTAGE M in it, why would anyone spend more on the MONTAGE M?

Fair question. So here’s the real-world answer, without turning this into a spec-sheet cage fight.

The MODX M gives you a lot of the sound. The MONTAGE M gives you the full flagship experience.

Same Family, Different League

Think of it like this. The MODX M is like getting a powerful sports car engine in a lighter, more affordable body. It moves, it sounds impressive, and for plenty of players it will absolutely do the job.

The MONTAGE M, though, is the full-fat luxury performance model. Same general sound family, same Yamaha DNA, but with more power, better controls, stronger build, better keybeds, more expression and a more professional feel under the fingers.

It is not just about having “more sounds”, because both instruments already have a frankly bonkers amount going on. The real difference is how much freedom, control and confidence the MONTAGE M gives you when you actually sit down and play.

The MONTAGE M Has More Headroom

One of the biggest differences is polyphony. That sounds painfully dull until you actually need it.

In plain English, polyphony is how many notes and sound layers the keyboard can cope with at once before it starts running out of breath. If you are playing a simple piano sound with your right hand and a bass note with your left, either keyboard will handle that without breaking a sweat.

Where it starts to matter is when you build bigger, richer sounds. If you are layering a concert grand, strings, pads, synth textures, basses, arpeggios and effects, while holding the sustain pedal down like a dramatic theatre child, that extra headroom becomes important.

The MONTAGE M gives you more room before notes start disappearing or getting stolen in the background. It is the difference between a pub singer with one speaker and a full band with a proper PA. Both can make music, but one has more lungs.

Aftertouch Makes A Big Difference

Aftertouch is one of the biggest practical differences between the two ranges. The MONTAGE M has it, and the MODX M does not.

Aftertouch means that after you play a note, you can press deeper into the key to change the sound. You might add vibrato to a lead synth, make brass swell, open a filter, bring strings to life, add movement to a pad, or make something go beautifully weird.

That might sound like a small thing on paper, but when you actually play with it, the keyboard suddenly feels more alive. On a more basic keyboard, you hit a note and the note happens. On a keyboard with aftertouch, you can almost lean into the sound. You can push it, bend it, growl at it a bit and make it respond more like an instrument than a preset machine.

The MONTAGE M8x goes even further with polyphonic aftertouch, which means individual notes can respond separately. For synth players, film-score types, sound designers and anyone who likes making one note feel like an emotional breakdown in slow motion, aftertouch is not a gimmick. It is a serious creative tool.

It Feels More Premium Under The Fingers

This is one of those things that is harder to explain in writing, but very obvious when you actually play them.

The MODX M is designed to be portable, practical and affordable. That is part of its charm. The 61 and 76 note versions use semi-weighted keys, while the 88 note version uses Yamaha’s GHS weighted action. For lots of players, that will be absolutely fine.

The MONTAGE M is built as Yamaha’s flagship synth, and the keybeds are simply a step up. The 61 and 76 note MONTAGE M models use FSX keys, while the MONTAGE M8x uses Yamaha’s GEX keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch.

In normal human terms, the MONTAGE M feels more serious, more controlled and more expensive, because it is. If you are playing live night after night, or using the instrument as your main studio keyboard, that feel matters.

You notice it in fast runs, expressive synth leads, piano parts, organ parts, string lines and all the little details where your hands are trying to say something slightly more interesting than “here is a note”.

More Hands-On Control

The MONTAGE M is also much more immediate to use. You get more knobs, more faders, more buttons, a ribbon controller and more ways to grab the sound and shape it in real time.

That matters because powerful keyboards can sometimes become menu-diving machines. You only wanted to turn the strings down, and suddenly you are three screens deep, questioning your life choices.

The MODX M has improved massively in this area compared with older MODX models. It now has more physical controls than before, and it is much more capable than some people may expect.

But the MONTAGE M still feels like the proper command centre. If you are performing live, building complex sounds, switching scenes, controlling multiple parts, tweaking filters or bringing layers in and out, the MONTAGE M gives you more under your hands.

That makes a real difference in the moment. It means less “hang on, where’s that setting?” and more “yes, I meant to do that.”

Better Build, Better Connections, More Pro Feel

The MONTAGE M is heavier, and normally that sounds like a bad thing. If you are carrying it up three flights of stairs after a wedding gig, you may briefly question all your decisions.

But the weight is there for a reason. The MONTAGE M feels more solid, more premium and more like a flagship instrument. It is the sort of keyboard that feels at home in a serious studio, on a professional stage, or as the main centrepiece of a performance rig.

It also gives you more professional connectivity, including proper balanced outputs. That may not sound exciting, but if you are plugging into recording gear, a PA system, stage boxes or professional audio setups, clean and reliable outputs matter.

The MODX M is excellent for portability, and that is genuinely one of its strengths. If you gig a lot and want something powerful that will not destroy your spine, the MODX M makes a lot of sense. But the MONTAGE M feels like the no-compromise version.

So Does The MODX M Sound Worse?

Not in the simple way people sometimes imagine.

The MODX M is not some cheap little keyboard pretending to be a proper synth. It shares a lot of serious DNA with the MONTAGE M. It has AWM2, FM-X and AN-X, a huge sound set and proper performance features. In the right hands, it can sound absolutely brilliant.

For many players, the MODX M will actually be the smarter buy. If you want a powerful Yamaha synth that is lighter, more affordable and still sounds fantastic, the MODX M is a superb option.

But if you want the best key feel, the most expressive control, more headroom, stronger build, more hands-on operation and the proper flagship experience, that is where the MONTAGE M earns its keep.

The Pub Version

The MODX M gets you a lot of the MONTAGE M sound for less money. The MONTAGE M gives you the full-fat flagship experience: more power, more expression, better controls, better keybeds, better build, better connections and more room to grow.

The MODX M is the clever buy for loads of musicians. The MONTAGE M is the one you buy when you want the best version of the idea.

It is not diet cola. It is not “that’ll do”. It is Yamaha putting the good biscuits out because guests are coming round.

Which One Should You Buy?

If you want maximum value, easy portability and huge sounds without going all-in on the flagship price, look at the MODX M. It is a seriously capable instrument and will be more than enough keyboard for plenty of players.

If you are a serious player, producer, sound designer, live performer, or you simply want the best-feeling and most expressive Yamaha synth workstation experience, look at the MONTAGE M.

The honest answer is that the MODX M is probably enough keyboard for most people. The MONTAGE M is the one you will want if “enough” is not really your thing.

Thinking of moving from your current keyboard to something like a MONTAGE M? We may be able to help with part exchange too.
