If you are trying to decide between the Yamaha MODX M8 and the Montage M8x, there are many differences on paper, from sound engines to features.
However, the most immediately noticeable difference, and one of the most important, is how the key action feels when you actually sit down and play.
In this video, Average Keyboard Guy compares Yamaha’s GHS (Graded Hammer Standard) action used in the MODX M8 with the GEX (Graded Hammer Effect) action found in the Montage M8x, purely from a pianist’s perspective.
Rather than reading specifications, the focus is on how each action influences the way you play, how deliberate you feel at the keys, and why one feels more playful while the other feels more formal and demanding.
Both instruments are excellent, but they are clearly designed for different types of players.
Understanding the feel of the key action is often a deciding factor, and it is something that cannot be learned from a spec sheet alone. If you are also interested in how the MODX range compares internally, there is another video looking at the differences between the MODX M6, M7, and M8 key actions, which is well worth watching alongside this.
