Why a Digital Piano?
Are digital pianos as good as “real” pianos?

Most people cannot tell the difference between traditional pianos and digital pianos today. This is because modern technology is so advanced that digital pianos can replicate the touch and feel of ‘real’ pianos so accurately.

Do the keys feel real?

Yes. The keys on digital pianos are usually ‘weighted’ so the way they feel to play and react to your input is just like the real thing. Don’t think that digital pianos feel and sound like that old Casio keyboard you got for Christmas in 1986.

Do they need tuning?

No. Digital pianos never go out of tune, so never need tuning.

Do they have the right amount of keys?

Yes. Most digital pianos have the standard 88 keys.

Can I wear headphones to practice?

Yes. When you plug headphones into a digital piano the speakers are disabled so only you can hear the sound. This is ideal for practicing late at night or when you don’t want to disturb anyone. Note: The standard jack socket for headphones is 6.35mm. iPhone headphone plugs are 3.5mm so you would need an adaptor.

Why do digital piano prices vary so much?

The price of a digital piano depends on a number of factors, for example whether the keys are plastic or wooden, whether the speakers are big or small, the amount of extra features it has like rhythms and backings or multi track recordings. The cabinet design and finish is a factor too. Small portable pianos tend to be cheaper than the more traditional looking non-portable ones.

Can I connect my iPhone/iPad?

Many of the Yamaha digital pianos and keyboards allow connection to an iPad/tablet now for various purposes. Yamaha have developed a lot of apps for their instruments, you can read more about them on the App Store.

What about other manufacturers of digital piano?

We are an independent shop but choose Yamaha digital pianos exclusively because they are regarded as the best in the world. You will find Yamaha digital pianos in most music schools, colleges and universities, and teachers nearly always recommend Yamaha because of how authentic the touch and sound is.

The incredibly popular P-Series from Yamaha gets a new sibling in the form of the gorgeous P-255 digital piano, which effortlessly combines stylish looks, an authentic playing feel and rich sound quality. The P255 makes a great addition to your home for practising on, or as a vital part of your arsenal during live performances.

Yamaha have incorporated Graded Hammer (GH) action across each key on the P 255. Therefore, lower keys are heavier to the touch and higher keys are lighter to the tough, making the playing experience as realistic as possible – in relation to acoustic concert pianos. This makes the P-255 an excellent digital piano for those who are practicing or performing, and for whom an accurate playing experience in an absolute must.

Each white key features a synthetic ivory keytop, which has excellent moisture absorption properties. When you’re playing for extended periods of time, the keytops will prevent your fingers from slipping over or between keys, allowing rapid finger movement to flow seamlessly across the keys.

Yamaha have gone to great lengths to ensure the P-255 performs to the exacting standards of the most discerning of pianists. The Pure CF Sound Engine is responsible for accurately generating tones that reproduce the subtle intricacies of Yamaha’s concert grand pianos. Thanks to the 256 note polyphony, you need not worry about notes dropping-off or cutting out unintentionally, allowing complex harmonies to be played with utter confidence. A range of voices allow you to vary the sound output of the P-255 to meet your practicing and performance requirements including (amongst others): Grand Piano, Live Grand, Synth Piano, Jazz Organ, Harpsichord, Strings, Choir and Synth Pad.

At your fingertips lies a wide selection of built-in rhythm tracks, each one bringing greater depth to live performances with accompaniments across Pop, Jazz and Latin styles. The rhythm tracks enhance your playing experience whether you’re: a soloist, perform as part of a group, or simply wish to make practicing more fun.

The P-255 has built-in EQ controls, which allow you to adjust the sound output. This can be useful if you wish to change the output in relation to your environment, or even for creative purposes.

Sounds are projected through two built-in 15W speakers that deliver sounds with power and precision.

Using the built-in USB drive, you can readily record and store your performances to a USB flash drive as full .wav audio files. Not only does this allow you to track and monitor your progress over time, but it makes transferring files over to Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software much easier for recording and editing purposes or transferring to friends without having to compromise on sound quality.

Drawing from their many years of experience, Yamaha have gone to every effort to ensure that the P-255 offers the best value for money, without compromising on build quality. The stylish black finish of the P-255 makes it as beautiful as it is compact.

The P-255 is compatible with the free-to-download “P-255 Controller” app via your iPhone or iPad. A wide of functions can be controlled through the intuitive graphical user interface, such as adjusting settings and controls, and recording settings to be recalled at a later time. An Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter/iPad Camera Connection Kit or dedicated Yamaha cable such as the i-MX1/i-UX1 is required for connection
