Why a Digital Piano?
Are digital pianos as good as “real” pianos?

Most people cannot tell the difference between traditional pianos and digital pianos today. This is because modern technology is so advanced that digital pianos can replicate the touch and feel of ‘real’ pianos so accurately.

Do the keys feel real?

Yes. The keys on digital pianos are usually ‘weighted’ so the way they feel to play and react to your input is just like the real thing. Don’t think that digital pianos feel and sound like that old Casio keyboard you got for Christmas in 1986.

Do they need tuning?

No. Digital pianos never go out of tune, so never need tuning.

Do they have the right amount of keys?

Yes. Most digital pianos have the standard 88 keys.

Can I wear headphones to practice?

Yes. When you plug headphones into a digital piano the speakers are disabled so only you can hear the sound. This is ideal for practicing late at night or when you don’t want to disturb anyone. Note: The standard jack socket for headphones is 6.35mm. iPhone headphone plugs are 3.5mm so you would need an adaptor.

Why do digital piano prices vary so much?

The price of a digital piano depends on a number of factors, for example whether the keys are plastic or wooden, whether the speakers are big or small, the amount of extra features it has like rhythms and backings or multi track recordings. The cabinet design and finish is a factor too. Small portable pianos tend to be cheaper than the more traditional looking non-portable ones.

Can I connect my iPhone/iPad?

Many of the Yamaha digital pianos and keyboards allow connection to an iPad/tablet now for various purposes. Yamaha have developed a lot of apps for their instruments, you can read more about them on the App Store.

What about other manufacturers of digital piano?

We are an independent shop but choose Yamaha digital pianos exclusively because they are regarded as the best in the world. You will find Yamaha digital pianos in most music schools, colleges and universities, and teachers nearly always recommend Yamaha because of how authentic the touch and sound is.

Yamaha AvantGrand N3X

The Yamaha N3X Avantgrand Hybrid Digital Grand Piano is designed to allow you to experience the response and feel of an authentic acoustic piano, with the increased functionality of a modern digital piano. Interpreting the latest reproduction techniques including Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) and a Tactile Response System, the Yamaha N3X Hybrid remains faithful to the tones and sounds of the original grand pianos upon which it is based. A four-channel Spatial Acoustic Speaker System offers an immersive three-dimensional experience, whilst Yamaha’s binaural sampling technology provides a remarkably lifelike alternative if using headphones. Equipped with real wooden keys with Ivorite keytops to allow for excellent dynamics and expression during your performances, the Yamaha N3X Avantgrand Hybrid Digital Grand Piano is a perfect replication of a classical, authentic grand piano.

The Perfect Balance of Acoustic and Digital

The Yamaha N3X Avantgrand Hybrid Digital Grand Piano is the ultimate no-compromise Hybrid Digital Grand Piano, combining the authentic feel of an acoustic grand with the functionality and versatility of an digital piano. The N3X uses real wooden keys with Ivorite® keytops that both look and feel just like natural ivory keys. To enhance the feeling of these high-quality keys, Yamaha employed a non-contact optical sensor system to provide you with a perfectly weighted and responsive playing experience, allowing for maximum expression and dynamic control throughout your performance. These sensors carefully measure the speed and depth of which the key is pressed, whilst a second sensor, located on each hammer shank, captures the strength and timing of the hammer. Each sensor and key works in perfect harmony and the result is a truly unique and authentic sound, perfect for capturing the essence of the music you are performing.

Rich, Authentic Tones

The Yamaha N3X integrates a four-channel Spatial Acoustic Speaker System alongside a flat-panel Soundboard Resonator. An oscillating transducer is used to transmit vibrations to the flat-panel soundboard, providing a classical tone with a realistic sound response, essential for replicating sounds from the original pianos. Yamaha took a unique approach to creating the AvantGrand series, capturing samples from four different locations around the soundboard (left, right, center, and rear). When compared to the conventional stereo sampling, the latest approach offered exceedingly rich and authentic sounds, complemented by the four-point speaker configuration. The speaker placement on the N3X matches up with the microphone positions from the recordings of the original piano, to accurately reproduce every nuance of sound as it should be heard.

Virtual Resonance Modeling

With 2 world-class grand pianos to choose between, you have access to two unique characters and styles to best match your preference or performance style. One simple button press can transform the way you play to best match your situation. The AvantGrand N3X interprets Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) technology, a replication of the resonance and string vibrations found on the original pianos. Traditionally in a grand piano, strings and sounds resonate throughout the entire body of the instrument which produces the rich reverberation that acoustic grand pianos are well know for. In the N3X, VRM is used to calculate the various states of the strings for each of the 88 notes. The N3X interprets the endless number of factors including key identification, key press strength, pedal timing, and more to perfectly reproduce the reverberation as it should be heard.
