Why a Digital Piano?
Are digital pianos as good as “real” pianos?

Most people cannot tell the difference between traditional pianos and digital pianos today. This is because modern technology is so advanced that digital pianos can replicate the touch and feel of ‘real’ pianos so accurately.

Do the keys feel real?

Yes. The keys on digital pianos are usually ‘weighted’ so the way they feel to play and react to your input is just like the real thing. Don’t think that digital pianos feel and sound like that old Casio keyboard you got for Christmas in 1986.

Do they need tuning?

No. Digital pianos never go out of tune, so never need tuning.

Do they have the right amount of keys?

Yes. Most digital pianos have the standard 88 keys.

Can I wear headphones to practice?

Yes. When you plug headphones into a digital piano the speakers are disabled so only you can hear the sound. This is ideal for practicing late at night or when you don’t want to disturb anyone. Note: The standard jack socket for headphones is 6.35mm. iPhone headphone plugs are 3.5mm so you would need an adaptor.

Why do digital piano prices vary so much?

The price of a digital piano depends on a number of factors, for example whether the keys are plastic or wooden, whether the speakers are big or small, the amount of extra features it has like rhythms and backings or multi track recordings. The cabinet design and finish is a factor too. Small portable pianos tend to be cheaper than the more traditional looking non-portable ones.

Can I connect my iPhone/iPad?

Many of the Yamaha digital pianos and keyboards allow connection to an iPad/tablet now for various purposes. Yamaha have developed a lot of apps for their instruments, you can read more about them on the App Store.

What about other manufacturers of digital piano?

We are an independent shop but choose Yamaha digital pianos exclusively because they are regarded as the best in the world. You will find Yamaha digital pianos in most music schools, colleges and universities, and teachers nearly always recommend Yamaha because of how authentic the touch and sound is.

Yamaha DGX660 Review
Even more powerful than ever before, the Yamaha DGX-660 Digital piano adds new and exciting sampled voices, versatile accompaniment, recording capabilities and polished effects to give you the capability of creating huge performances and recordings. The DGX-660 gives you authentic piano feel, but packs in all of the power of a performance workstation into a unit that is easy to use for all.

The pure CF sampling engine offers the sound of a Yamaha CFIIIS full concert grand and has been painstakingly sampled under meticulously controlled conditions to reproduce the sound of this superb instrument with amazing fidelity.

To complement this, the DGX660 comes with a fully weighted, 88-note graded keyboard, this means that the ‘feel’ will be heavier at the bottom end and get lighted towards the top, just like a real piano. You also get digitally reproduced damper resonance for even more realistic performance. These features usually compromise on portability, but at under 30Kg (including the stand), the DGX 660 can go anywhere.

As well as the articulate digital grand, you get Yamaha’s stunning, Live! Cool! And Sweet! Voices, these include authentic guitars, lush strings, and punchy brass. These are generated using a blend of long, stereo and multi-layered samples that capture the true essence of each instrument, right down to the genuine resonance, expression, and vibrato.

In addition to these amazing sounds, Yamaha’s smart chord function helps to provide the perfect backing band, giving the player full, professional-sounding accompaniment whenever required, over 100 different styles. All this sound is then projected from the built-in powerful stereo speakers housed in large enclosures containing a separate woofer and tweeter for crisp, distortion-free bass and treble with excellent dynamic control.

The Yamaha DGX-660 is compatible with XG song files, which are included with a selection of Hal Leonard songbooks, forming the You Are The Artist series. This combination of the songbook and play-along file help you to learn your favorite artists’ songs quickly and accurately. When combined with the Yamaha Education Suite, you can slow down the song, separate each hand and even let the DGX-660 give you an accuracy rating to help gauge your performance.

For the home, studio or stage, the Yamaha DGX-660 Digital Piano shines without compromise and offers the best of piano experience, workstation power all in a portable unit that can be enjoyed by anybody with a passion for music.
