Why a Digital Piano?
Are digital pianos as good as “real” pianos?

Most people cannot tell the difference between traditional pianos and digital pianos today. This is because modern technology is so advanced that digital pianos can replicate the touch and feel of ‘real’ pianos so accurately.

Do the keys feel real?

Yes. The keys on digital pianos are usually ‘weighted’ so the way they feel to play and react to your input is just like the real thing. Don’t think that digital pianos feel and sound like that old Casio keyboard you got for Christmas in 1986.

Do they need tuning?

No. Digital pianos never go out of tune, so never need tuning.

Do they have the right amount of keys?

Yes. Most digital pianos have the standard 88 keys.

Can I wear headphones to practice?

Yes. When you plug headphones into a digital piano the speakers are disabled so only you can hear the sound. This is ideal for practicing late at night or when you don’t want to disturb anyone. Note: The standard jack socket for headphones is 6.35mm. iPhone headphone plugs are 3.5mm so you would need an adaptor.

Why do digital piano prices vary so much?

The price of a digital piano depends on a number of factors, for example whether the keys are plastic or wooden, whether the speakers are big or small, the amount of extra features it has like rhythms and backings or multi track recordings. The cabinet design and finish is a factor too. Small portable pianos tend to be cheaper than the more traditional looking non-portable ones.

Can I connect my iPhone/iPad?

Many of the Yamaha digital pianos and keyboards allow connection to an iPad/tablet now for various purposes. Yamaha have developed a lot of apps for their instruments, you can read more about them on the App Store.

What about other manufacturers of digital piano?

We are an independent shop but choose Yamaha digital pianos exclusively because they are regarded as the best in the world. You will find Yamaha digital pianos in most music schools, colleges and universities, and teachers nearly always recommend Yamaha because of how authentic the touch and sound is.

“CVP800 series is out and includes loads of new features- better styles, more realistic voices, new Revo drums and improved speakers. Checkout our youtube videos for more details, or call us for more information.

The new CVP805 and CVP809 Clavinovas are certainly ahead of their game, and whilst every new model comes out and we all say “ they can’t improve on this” Yamah have done it again!

These new Clavinova models offer players of all skill levels limitless possibilities to compose, sing, learn and explore all new musical directions. In terms of sound, they deliver rich, exquisite tones thanks to extensive digital sampling from two of the world’s most sought-after concert pianos: the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial.

The exclusive Grand Touch keyboard with real wooden elements provides individual differences in the weight and return of each key giving it the realism you want, The CVP809 models also feature carefully adjusted counterweights that gives them the touch and feel similar to that of a real grand piano. This allows for improved playability when playing pianissimo with a light touch, and better key return in rapid passages.

You also get a huge library of new backing styles to join in with, songs to sing along to and voices to manipulate allowing you to create your own style of music. The new Revo drums play different bars every time just like a real drummer, so it’s even more realistic than ever before and the bluetooth facility allows you to link up your phone or tablet and play along with your favourite bands, and hear the original track or the vocals tracks coming through your instruments speakers.

These new models also include astonishing spatial acoustics and ensemble functionality so realistic that you can almost feel the presence of the other performers around you. From breathy saxophones to ringing guitars and warm resonant strings, the CVP Series features an impressive collection of natural instrument voices. And using the Super Articulation technology the distinctive characteristics of each instrument are incredible.

Yamaha’s new apps “Chord Tracker” and “Smart Pianist” will even tell you what chords are playing back on your phone or tablet’s music library songs, and show you on your device’s screen the sheet music in most cases in it’s “audio to score” facility.

You also get a great new feature known as Chord Looper which enables you to record a chord sequence and leave it repeating freeing up your left hand so that it can adjust or play something extra. And you can have up to eight different sequences on hand every time so that can count for intros, verses, choruses, middle eights allowing you to select the sequence and enjoy joining in.

And listening through headphones is now better due to the sound being optimised so that what you hear coming through the earpieces sounds more realistic, and the speakers have been improved too- on the CVP809 the speakers have been made from the spruce offcuts ground up from the soundboards of real acoustic pianos and twisted flare ports.

All in all the CVP800 series are huge improvements on any previous model and well worth an upgrade!”

Enjoy authentic Voices and backings in an instrument with the same feel as a grand piano. Bluetooth connectivity makes it easy to play music from your smart device.

Key Improvements

Pianists prefer grand pianos not only because of the way they sound, but also because of the way the keys respond to their touch. When grand piano keys are struck, there is a certain weight or resistance to the touch. Similarly, when keys are released, they return to a resting position based on the balance between the key and the internal mechanics of the keyboard. It is difficult to reproduce the natural return of the keys of a grand piano in a digital piano, due to differences in the mechanics. Yamaha carefully studied these characteristics when developing the GrandTouch keyboard, and has now reproduced this fine balance in the Clavinova digital piano. The result is GrandTouch – detailed grand piano feel that allows for uniform tone control, precise rhythm and smooth melodic expression – fundamental to an exceptional musical performance.

Steam wirelessly with Bluetooth® audio

You can play music through the audio system on the Clavinova by using a Bluetooth-enabled smart device. Enjoy playing along with any songs on your smart device as you stream audio such as mp3 files.

Explore a wide variety of backing Styles

CVP Series pianos provide plenty of non-piano Voices as well as band and orchestra accompaniment in a wide array of genres, including jazz and pop. Play your favorite tunes as they are written, or try your hand at arranging—the next catchy arrangement is just waiting to be discovered.

Sing, compose and explore the limitless possibilities of the CVP Series

CVP Series pianos are ideal for people who want to sing, compose and satisfy their hunger to enjoy music in new ways. Plug in a microphone and sing—CVP Series pianos provide harmonic backing. Or, use the multitude of convenient functions for composing to create your own original backing. CVP Series pianos inject a whole lot of fun into time with family and friends.

Two world class concert grands in one digital piano

The Yamaha CFX, our flagship 9’ concert grand piano, offers sparkling highs and a powerful resonant bass with a sound that projects to the furthest reaches of any concert hall. The Bösendorfer Imperial is a piano known throughout its long history for its classic Viennese sound. Both are outstanding pianos characterized by distinctive traits of power, versatility, subtlety and lightness. Both are found only in a Clavinova digital piano.

VRM physical modeling—the distinctive reverberation generated by the entire body of a concert grand piano

In a grand piano, sound resonates throughout the body of the instrument, producing a rich reverberation that envelops the listener in sound. This phenomena is reproduced perfectly in the Clavinova through enhanced Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM). It calculates the various states of the strings for each of the 88 notes on the keyboard, from one instant to the next, and timing and depth of damper pedals pressed. This technology allows for vivid, bright, richly-varied expression that reflects the limitless number of factors inherent in piano performance.
