First of all, let me tell you that at the time of this article being published, there is still no official news from our friends at Yamaha about when a potential successor – a ‘Genos 2’ if you will – might be launched. So don’t get too excited.

Furthermore, despite our persistent efforts on your behalf when we played host to some VIPs from Yamaha Japan recently, David and I were unable to extract even the slightest morsel of gossip about it either.

This doesn’t mean that we can’t attempt to deduce when a potential launch of a ‘Yamaha Genos 2’ might be, right? At the very least, it’ll be fun doing so. Here we go.

The successor to the Yamaha Genos is much-anticipated

The Past Hints at the Future:

If you were to judge by the typical interval between the release of previous flagship models from Yamaha, like the Tyros 3, 4, 5, and the Genos itself, it’s fair to say that, right now, we’re overdue a replacement for the much-loved Yamaha Genos.

This is something I speculated upon further in this blog.

Yamaha Genos 2 Unveiling Opportunities:

Last month, due to this press release from Yamaha, I was keeping a particularly keen eye on three dates: 13th April, 14th April, and 15th April, as this was when one of the music industry’s biggest trade shows (NAMM – National Association of Music Merchants) was happening in Anaheim, California.

Big trade events, like the NAMM show, are traditionally where manufacturers choose to launch new products, and there were indeed showcases of Yamaha’s most recent keyboard & piano releases; the CK61, CK88, P-S500 Smart Piano, and CVP-900 series.

All of the above are excellent products in their own right, but, alas, for us Genos fans, there was no announcement at NAMM.

A Ray of Hope?

So, are there any other notable dates in 2023 when a ‘Genos 2’ launch might happen?

Well, with the other main industry trade show, Musikmesse, in Frankfurt, Germany, no longer taking place since its cancellation earlier this year, in my opinion, there is only one significant date left in 2023, and this is my best guess as to when we’ll see a potential Yamaha Genos 2 being launched.

Are you ready for it? I’ll give you a clue: You’re probably going to need a bigger chimney.

A Yamaha Genos 2? Better Than Getting Socks:

Yes, you’ve guessed correctly, it’s Christmas, and that seems a very long way away, doesn’t it?

From a purely retail business perspective, Christmas is like, well, Christmas!

But don’t fret, Genos lovers, because as you have probably already noted, when the Genos itself was launched back in 2017, it was not at Christmas, it was actually on the 2nd of October.

Why? Well, I would have thought that was obvious. It’s because letters to Santa need a full 2-month period to make it to the North Pole!

To translate that into grownup, it means that when a new flagship model (like a ‘Genos 2′) is launched, with the objective of capitalising on the big uptick of discretionary spending that Christmas time brings, the seed of desire must be planted into customers’ minds well in advance of 25th December.

Would something like this fit in your stocking?

My Advice To You:

Therefore, my fellow Genos people, my advice to you is to spend lightly on your summer holidays, for the autumn might well bring you something you’ll want in your Christmas stocking.

    1. Yes, that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking for some time. Previous Tyros keyboards always seem to be launched late Autumn about every 2 to 3 years in the past and in view of Korg’s update (PAX 5) sometime back I would imagine a Genos update has to very imminent. Let’s just hope it’s worth the wait as I think the current model is pretty much perfect in terms of quality of sounds and layout, so it’s a job to know what they could genuinely improve on. However, for me, (and I suspect few others), the one thing I would love to see improved upon would be the keybed. The black notes could to be just slightly broader, and less plasticky to accommodate pianistic playing. I had a Korg PAX3 76 note a few years ago and the keybed on that was really quite nice and very playable. I continue to ‘bang away with this, as I remember some years ago I was chatting to the brilliant player James Sergeant and asked him why doesn’t Yamaha bring out a 76 note Tyros, and he replied that he couldn’t see them ever doing that as they would never sell enough units. So, what’s the phrase?… ‘never say never!’🤞

      1. If you want imagine how the Genos 2 coud be read the manual istruction of the new Clavinova CVP 909 which is in substance a good piano with the genos inside. But without the multifuncional Pads. There are infact all the Genos styles revised. And in substitution of the various functions buttons of Genos every functionon Clavinova is called touching the screen. I’ve read the reference manual of the mentioned Clavinova too. It would be strange if Yamaha will use a different Arranger Section on the new Genos. There would not be a reason to change the firmware.

      2. Correct Martyn, I so believe that Yamaha as speculated now that tomorrow being the 2nd October 2023 which makes the Yamaha Genos years old … In regard to technology timely, that is rather a long time to update to an all new professional flagship arranger keyboard. Im not so optimistic that Yamaha would include an 88 fully weighted Genos 2 taking into consideration that the new Yamaha Clavinova CVP-900 series. In all honesty, I still would prefer a better keybed with 76 keys as it’s better for playing styles. I very much hope that Yamaha finally realise that they might be loosing customer’s as moving to Korg or Roland for that matter should they continue with such a delay with the Genos 2 … I will wait till the end of October and then decide between the original Genos or the Yamaha Clavinova CVP-909B.

  • I do not know why people are frightened of 76 note keyboards, because you can split the keyboard on the Genos to use in one registration. All depends on the song that you have in mind though.
Saves you keep reaching for buttons.. All the best john

  • Maybe a refined Hammond Organ section with almost genuine sounding Leslie speakers!

Difficult to imagine what could be so fantastic I would part with somewhere between £4000 – £5000 when my Genos v2 only gets better and better as I discover more and more ways to shape my music.

  • New Genos should happen middle to end of October this year.
    Epiano’s,”put me down for one”.
All the signs are there from lists leaked and disappearing to make us look like a Mushroom in the dark!!
You do not have to be a Psyhcic to look into the Yamaha crystal ball.

  • Yamaha need to get a move on, the new Korg Pa5x is making lots of friends and cashing in on the market need for up-to-the minute work stations!!!
