Genos 2.0 Firmware installation -Part 1 (The firmware itself)

If you have purchased a Yamaha Genos keyboard from us then follow these instructions to update the firmware.

Did you know? You can print this page using the button at the bottom of the page

Important Notice:

As this is such a big upgrade to your Genos, when upgrading to version 2.0 Yamaha is recommending that you save any of your own personally made files like songs you have recorded, registrations you have made, sounds you have tweaked and saved, as well as MIDI templates ( only relevant if you are using your keyboard with a lower keyboard of pedals) and User Effects settings (only relevant if you get deep into your Genos with saving extra effects, etc)

1  Make a “Back-up” file
2 Save all Registrations to stick – follow our instructions if you need to
3 Save any Midi Setup files ( only relevant if you use extra keyboard or pedals)
4 Save any User Effects settings ( only relevant if you’ve tweaked effects in the past)
5 Saving system set up files in unnecessary

Once its all been updated you can load it all back into your instrument again following our instructions.

1 Turn your Genos off

2 Using the screwdriver, open the flap underneath the Genos containing our Genos Tipsters USB stick and move it into the USB socket on the front of your Genos and turn your Genos back on

First, you need to make the backup file

1 Ensure you are on Main Screen. If not, press exit until you see the screen with the orange and blue sections

2 Press the long white Menu button on the right-hand side of your Genos, then select Menu 2 on the screen

3 Select Utility at the bottom

4 Select Factory Reset/ Back up on the left  and go down to page 2 of 2 using the white triangle on the right-hand side

5 Put a tick in the “include Audio Files” and then press the “back up” button on the screen

6 You’ll see a reminder to insert your USB stick, press ok

7 You’ll get a final confirmation – select OK

8 You may be asked to overwrite the current “back up ” file – press Yes to overwrite it with the new additions from you Genos (the saving process might take a couple of minutes)

9 When completed, press OK – Your back up is now complete

Now to save any of your personal files

This is for saving files that you have personally made, like songs you have recorded, registrations you have made, sounds you have tweaked and saved, as well as MIDI templates ( only relevant if you are using your keyboard with a lower keyboard of pedals) and User Effects settings (only relevant if you get deep into your Genos with saving extra effects, etc)

Yamaha is suggesting that these are stored additionally to your back up, so follow the instructions below to ensure these are safe

1 Press the Registration bank – and + buttons together on panel bottom left under screen

2 Select “User” on the left of the screen, then “file” top right of the screen

3 Select Copy, then either highlight just your important registration files, by pressing each of them till they go white – or save all of them by selecting “select all”

4 Now “Copy”

5 Then select your USB stick on the left (probably the highest number one)

6 Then “copy here”

This might take a few minutes ( but well worth the wait )

You need to repeat this process for all of your personal files, following the same instructions as above -so midi songs, registrations, user multi pads, audio songs, midi settings, and user effects files

Now – Ensure you put this USB stick somewhere very safe whilst you do the updates

Turn off your instrument and ensure that the correct USB with the latest 2.0 Upgrade is inserted into the USB socket on the front of your Genos (you can download the latest version for free or simply purchase one of our pre-loaded USB memory sticks here)

1 Hold down the style control START/STOP button to the left of the screen and turn the Genos back on.

2 Once fully on – let go of the button and follow the instructions on the screen

3 When the process has completed, turn the Genos off.

4 Remove the USB stick containing the latest Genos firmware version from the front socket of the Genos.

5 Insert the original Genos Tipsters USB stick back in the socket underneath the Genos and close the flap using the screw.

6 Turn the Genos back on

Now, whilst we’ve been encouraged by Yamaha to back up all your files and ensure they have been saved, we don’t believe you will need them to be loaded back in at this time. If any files are missing – do give us a call and we can help you load them back from the saved files you have just made.

Congratulations. Job done!
