As a digital piano and keyboard specialist with over 10 years of experience—especially with Yamaha products—I’m often asked which digital piano is best for beginners.
If you’re just starting your piano journey, you’ll want something that feels close to a traditional acoustic piano but without the hefty price tag.
That’s where digital pianos with weighted keys come in, offering a great balance of affordability and performance.
Today, I’ll guide you through four brilliant options for beginners: the Yamaha P-225, Yamaha YDP-165, Korg G1b Air, and Yamaha CLP-725.
Each of these models has unique features, but they all provide that essential “weighted key” feel that helps you build good piano-playing habits from day one.
The Yamaha is a fantastic entry-level digital piano featuring Yamaha’s GHS (Graded Hammer Standard) action.
This means the keys are heavier at the lower end and lighter at the upper end, just like a real acoustic piano. For beginners, it’s an excellent way to build finger strength and technique.
One of the P-225’s standout qualities is its compact and portable design, making it perfect for those who are short on space but still want a piano that doesn’t compromise on quality.
A step up from the P-225, the Yamaha YDP-165 features the GH3 (Graded Hammer 3) key action, which offers a more realistic response.
The GH3 action is designed to replicate the feel of a grand piano even more accurately, with faster key return and a smoother overall experience.
The YDP-165 also includes Yamaha’s famous CFX Grand Piano sound, known for its rich, resonant tone.
If you’re serious about learning and are looking for something a bit more advanced, the YDP-165 is an excellent choice.
The Korg G1b Air is another strong contender in this category, featuring Korg’s RH3 (Real Weighted Hammer) action.
Like Yamaha’s models, it simulates the graded action of an acoustic piano, making it perfect for developing good playing habits.
One of the G1b Air’s standout features is the option to switch between three different grand piano sounds, giving you a variety of tonal options.
It also comes with Bluetooth audio playback, allowing you to stream music through the piano’s speakers—great for playing along with your favourite tunes!
For those who have a bit more budget to spare, the Yamaha CLP-725 is a superb investment.
It features Yamaha’s GrandTouch-S key action, which is designed to replicate the nuanced feel of a real grand piano.
The CLP (Clavinova) sound engine further enhances this experience, providing an incredibly realistic piano sound.
While it’s a more premium option, the CLP-725 truly stands out, offering an inspiring playing experience that’s ideal for both beginners and more experienced players.
While all of these digital pianos are fantastic options for beginners, the Yamaha CLP-725 is my personal favourite.
The Clavinova series has always impressed me with its ability to emulate the feel and sound of a real grand piano.

These items must be sent with a heavy-goods courier (typically APC or FedEx). On occasion, depending on which is fastest, we will drop-ship directly from Yamaha to your address via Dachser.
Tracking will be provided by the haulier, with a typical arrival time of 1-2 working days.
*If you have included the optional £180 "Yamaha Premium Service" home delivery & setup option offered on selected products, we will contact you regarding arrangements after purchase.
**The Yamaha CSP Series, Yamaha CVP905 & CVP909, Yamaha CLP875, 885 & 895GP, and Yamaha NU1Xa are all sold on behalf of Yamaha and arrive with us on a per-order basis. ***If you have included the optional £99 home delivery & setup option offered on selected products, we will send your details direct to the installation team, who will contact you within 48 hours to make arrangements.
Depending on which option is most appropriate, we will either contact you to discuss a bespoke ePianos delivery surcharge for goods we can’t package for a 3rd party courier, or otherwise dispatch goods via FedEx or APC.
If a courier is used, tracking will be provided by them directly, with a typical arrival time of 1-2 working days.
Example products: Yamaha PSR-SX920, Yamaha P-225, Yamaha NP-15.
These items will be sent via courier (typically APC or FedEx). On occasion, depending on which is fastest, we will drop-ship directly from Yamaha to your address via UPS or Parcelforce.
Tracking will be provided by the courier, with a typical arrival time of 1-2 working days.
Smaller items, such as books, discs, etc, will be dispatched via Royal Mail second class.
After purchase, you can download the file either from the order confirmation page or the "Downloads" tab in "My Account".
If you have selected the option to receive a pre-loaded USB stick, then this will be dispatched via Royal Mail.
We will contact you regarding any pre-ordered items, and let you know when they arrive so as to arrange delivery with you at a convenient time.

This is a special order "agency" item, and comes to us directly from Yamaha on a per-order basis.
It typically takes 7-10 days for this item to arrive with us, whereupon we'll contact you to discuss the arrangement of delivery.
For any pre-orders, we will contact you as soon as the item arrives with us to schedule a delivery with you, and update you with an ETA.
Occasionally, there may be availability issues with our suppliers, in which case we'll get in touch with you to see if you're happy to wait, or if you'd like to cancel the order and receive a full refund.
