As a pianist and teacher, I am always looking for fun ways to keep the interest of my young pianists in particular. They love to play with the various voices on my own Yamaha CLP525 digital piano.
What I hadn’t realised as an adult was just how much fun different features are on the piano and how much enjoyment it brings to be able to add a whole band to my playing.

9mIsaac explains how the SmartPianist App works on a compatible piano.
The Yamaha CSP170 has an incredible capability to integrate with your smart device, be it a tablet or smartphone.
The Yamaha SmartPianist app allows you to program voices, styles, and songs and even put in and play along with songs in your own music library on the device you connect.
So, whereas I am going to talk about my thoughts on the ‘extras’, the Yamaha CSP170 as a stand-alone piano, is an awesome instrument.
There are numerous choices of pianos to choose from out of the 692 voices available, all of which sound authentic.

One of the ways I feel the SmartPianist app is a fantastic feature is the option to ‘play along’.
You can choose from a range of pre-programmed songs and then set it up to play the backing track or one or other hand whilst you join in.
To take this one step further, there is a ‘Guide Lamps’ feature.
This ingenious addition means that you can follow the score along and at the same time the correct keys are indicated by a stream light.
It is a similar but far superior concept to games like Piano Tiles. The app can even be set to stop before the note to give you time to find it, likewise, if you are a proficient player, you can play at your own speed.

Now, where do I feel this is useful? Improvisation, oh, and learning right and left-hand notation, composing and maintaining tempos.
As a teacher, I can upload my own pieces, which could be something a student is learning, and then when we play it back, I can remove one hand so my student can practise the other but with the support of the ‘missing’ hand.
For singers, the instantaneous ability to transpose your backing track to a key that may be more accessible for your voice…The list is endlessly inventive.

I can think of numerous reasons why this app could change the way I teach my students.
By the way, Yamaha are giving away a free iPad with the purchase of a Yamaha CSP170 until 15/12/22!
